My Dear friend wants to send her "troubled teen" away to military or boarding school

I love my friend dearly, & she is really struggling with her DS & drug issues (marijuana only). He's defiant, & she can't seem to handle him. Her knee jerk reaction is send him away to military or boarding school. Do they even take kids with these issues? What else can I recommend to her?

My ILs sent BIL to one when he was a teenager. He actually loved it and did very well. So of course my ILs brought him back home.

Hopefully you’re friend is better than my ILs, but my point is that it’s not always a bad experience.

You can take him as an alternative.

Her “knee-jerk reaction”? That’s a bit judgy. Is she asking you for advice or help? If not, why are you trying to get involved?

My best friend's stepdaughter was a disaster. They dragger her kicking and screaming to a military boarding school. Initially, it was a nightmare. She did not do well. Then, somehow she turned it around. Graduated at the top of her class, went to top university. Looking back, it was the best thing they did for her.

There is a lot to be said to save the relationship by putting space there. She loves him too much to continue on the path they are on. There are a lot of boarding schools - and military school is not the only option.

Donald Trump was sent away to military school for being an a×$hol$. Definitely didn't cure that problem, but he did end up as president.

What’s with all the ampersands?

Most people who do this hire an educational consultant to find the best fit. Also look for a program that is a member of: https://natsap.org/.

She could also join the WTRS group on Facebook which has a wealth of information.

He’s the exception to every rule, so that means nothing.

I am a graduate of Randolph Macon Academy. I was a little sh*t in HS, so my parents sent me there. Worked wonders. Highly recommend. I am now a successful adult, which would not have been likely had I stayed on the path I was on.
