Coughing

Why are so many kids in school when they're coughing??? Not even wearing a mask, not even covering their mouths -- just coughing with open mouths and tongues sticking out. I get that parents don't care about anything but getting their kids out of the house, but why are schools allowing kids in the building when they're coughing? When hospitals are filled to capacity with children who have respiratory illnesses?

Because shutting things down is done. If kids stayed home for every sniffle or cough they'd never be in school. Its an overcorrection from covid.

Kids are filling hospitals right now. It's not a sniffle.

How do you know this is happening? Do you follow your kid into the classroom? Are you a teacher? My kid has been coughing for a month now. I have no idea what is wrong with him. I dose him with Claritin and Robitussin every morning and if he happens to cough as I am dropping him off, I look at him with exaggerated pity in front of his teachers and just say, "Aw allergies got you this morning, huh, bud?" and then drive off to get Starbucks before going to work. Sorry.

And when he has a fever, you give him tylenol and advil and hope they don't wear off too early. We get it.

"We get it." Literally!

A cough is not always contagious. It is a symptom of a myriad of issues. I just took my kid to PM Pediatrics at 730 on a weekday because I got the side-eye with his hoarse voice (likely from halloween hooting and hollering) and cough. He has no fever, no lethargy, no congestion, no wheezing, no breathing issues, no sleeping issues. Takes Claritin daily. He tested negative for flu, COVID, and no signs of strep or ear infections.

Got a letter to go back to school because a COUGH is not enough to keep a child home. It is a group setting. Deal with it.

OP, I’m sure you and your partner stay home from work for the entire duration of every cold - no runny nose, no coughing in public. And you keep your kids home from school for that as well. No matter that your elementary school kid, who already missed 1.5 years of school due to closures and is behind, feels fine and is clawing the walls with boredom at home. No matter that your high schooler with a lingering cough doesn’t want to miss a week of class so they can do well on mid term tests that will affect final GPA for college applications.

Nope, these things don’t matter. If they’re showing any sign of illness, no one leaves the house.

Lots of kids have lingering coughs from asthma and allergies. Lots of kids have runny nose and congestion. If my kids have any of those symptoms, I only keep them home if their behavior/appetite is impacted, or fever, etc. But we are absolutely not missing multiple days and days due to the run-of-the-mill congestion. We did that in 2020 and 2021, happily. Not anymore.

Because we shut down schools for 1.5 years and kids are far behind enough as it is. I give my kid a COVID test and if it is negative and kid is otherwise fine, I send him in.

We even stopped giving the COVID test after our pediatrician advised that if you have symptoms the only negative you can trust is a PCR. we’re not missing school for 2 days for a PCR for a kid that feels fine.

If my kids are sick - any GI symptom, fever, loss of appetite, lack of energy - I absolutely keep them home. My first grader has had the sniffles for 3 days and is otherwise fine. She goes to school.

You should't take Robitussin daily. Stop being selfish and get your kid to a doctor.

This. It is ridiculous to expect kids to stay home from school for a cough (or for runny nose/congestion). Not going to do it.

What a weird post, OP.

There is nothing on the bottle that says don't take it daily.

I made a post like this last week in health forum and got berated. The hospitals are over flowing with RSV babies. Stay home when you have a new cough, at least tell your kids to wear a mask and cough into their elbow!
