My kid borrowed my car slowly pulling into parking spot scrapped against other parked car. Not on my policy.
Located driver in store gave insurance information. Person was really mad yelling and kinda nasty. Person asked the kid number, for Fathers phone number. Me. Plus insurance card and address. They provided only their mobile number. He called yelling at me. Like 30 minutes. Finally I say look I saw picture Just a scrape meet me at body shop I will pay. Somehow he thinks I will meet him on ten minutes notice but at work gets mad I am ducking him calls my insurance next day. Here is weird part he keeps calling. I don’t rates to go up so I agree to pay. I keep asking for estimate never comes. My insurance called me but my car zero damage. But he never brought car in for estimate. Finally, he wants me to meet him at body shop of his choice. I show up. He does not bring car. Ok. I say where is written estimate. He has none. He calls owner over and says I showed up a few weeks ago around closing and you told me maybe $1,200 or $1,400 to fix. He wants cash it check. I explain I brought credit card to auto body shop to pay. I expected car here or at last written estimate. He was like better pay or insurance going to go up. I talk to owner afterwards and he thought very fishy. I shows him picture said maybe $1,000. I call my insurance company and I said look did he ever bring this car in for an estimate since he said filing a claim. They said no. It is three months now. What now. I have an accident on my policy as they charged me as soon as he called. I switched insurance companies and added kid to policy. I am guessing car got stolen, totaled, accident etc and he still wants his Money. Weird he won’t bring car in. I literally showed up to pay. Zero damage my car. Is there anything else I can do. My old insurance of no help. They left case open. My old insurance did not pay. They want my kid to talk to them. But for what? To admit fault? I lost all communication with guy after I said unless that car comes on for written estimate and I pay body shop directly I am not paying. |
| Your kid was not on your policy but was driving your car as an occasional driver? Why was he not on your policy? I would just keVecit to insurance at this point. Your current rate reflects the accident on the old insurance anyways. |
| He’ll file a nuisance lawsuit. |
| You should never let someone drive your car if they aren’t on the policy, ESPECIALLY A CHILD. You also should have let the insurance deal with it. I’d turn it over to insurance and block the guys number and get the kid added to your plan if you haven’t already done so. You and your child screwed up, be responsible, do the right thing. |
| Of course the insurance wants to talk to the driver. Why wouldn't they? Your kid is responsible enough to drive they need to be able to handle this too |
| He needs to go through your insurance at this point. |
| He wants money from you but won’t get the car fixed. He’ll pocket the money. I will tell him at this point as your insurance knows anyway to handle thru insurance. Be very clear in a text you want no further direct contact. If he contacts you after this block his number. Possibly look into getting a peace order ( if you’re in MD, ) |
| I’m thinking of filing a nuisance lawsuit based on the almost unreadable OP. |

This is what insurance is made for.
We paid someone directly when we did minor damage (broken light) to their car with a rental Uhaul that we hadn't paid for the extra insurance on. The guy we hit was pretty reasonable, and it was still a total hassle and stressful. I will never try to negotiate a direct payment again. |
My kid away at school was just driving in summer. I just never added the kid. I did now. But can’t change that. |
OP my old insurance company wanted to talk to kid for sole purpose to formally admit fault. Plus want to Confirm did I give permission to drive my car. My issue is if we say kid did not have permission that is not covered. If I say I gave permission I will get why not on policy. My other issue my kid was pretty upset. The other driver was screaming and yelling at her to store manager had to pull her away. He then started texting her back and forth till she told him deal with me. I don’t see any upside them taking to her. To be honest I was told my old insurance company given small amount, given fact my kid admitted fault at scene, there are witnesses in store if my kid does not respond they will pay him and I stay charged accident. I am fine with that. I already am paying higher insurance, kid on policy. My old insurance company won’t pay him regardless of what I say unless he brings car in. Basically my insurance told me he brings it in he is getting paid unless I dispute it. Which I am not. It is just strange. I am at double fault. Kid not on policy and scrape. But I expected other driver bring car in for quote right away. Text me bill. Say pay body shop ASAP or I file claim. That did not happens. Also I worry even if he does bring it in my old company might screw him for waiting so long, he did tell my insurer he had a car accident after my car accident and car in body shop that accident which delayed him bringing it in to my insurance. I suspect he threw this scrape into his other accident and can’t bring car in as fixed already. It is very weird. Right now I feel I should do something but every scenario. Do nothing, contact other car owner, contact my insurance all has issues. So I do nothing, but that is not an answer |
| Many many years ago I had an accident and decided to pay out of pocket for the damage to the other car. The driver kept calling back asking for more money. I finally called my insurer (USAA) and they told me this is why you should always file with the insurance. Recently we did pay OOP when my son scraped a car at school. But in that case the owner provided a written estimate and we trusted they wouldn’t try to take advantage since their son was a classmate. I don’t care if they ever went through with the bodywork because the fact is my son did damage their car and we wanted to make it right. But if we didn’t have the written estimate and it had been expensive, I definitely would have notified insurance. |
🤣🤣🤣 I know, right??! |
| Whatever insurance premium is being avoided is not worth this amount of effort and headache. |
| Op, its a scam. When I had some hit me they asked to pay out of pocket. I got a few estimates, went with the cheapest, they went to the shop to pay, got the car fixed, done. I'd ask for proof your child did it and ask for pictures of the damage/cars involved and then tell them to talk to your insurance. |
