Dieting post eating disorder

Anonymous
I have a history of eating disorder issues. I recently injured myself and was restricted from movement for several months. Gained 25 pounds and am miserable. I want to diet responsibly to get back to where I was but I am so hesitant to restrict. Anyone with experience?

Please do not get advice from dcum on this. Please please. It is borderline dangerous to ask for advice on something like this here in my opinion. Please talk to a dietician who has specific training in eating disorders. The last part is important, not all dieticians do and it is essential that they be very experienced.

Former bulimic here. Agree with the advice to see a nutritionist or dietitian. If that is not possible, I have always found WW (formerly Weight Watchers) to be a healthy approach. The only difference is that I did not weigh myself.

Don't do it. I've been in your shoes a few times now and have learned that dieting responsibly is not something my brain does. All it takes is a few pound loss and it becomes obsessive and takes over. I had an injury a few months ago and had to be so honest with family about not trying to lose the extra weight from the more sedentary lifestyle, but I did see that when I went back to my normal activity and really worked on trusting my body it did go back to my norm on it's own. If you are set on trying to lose the weight, I strongly recommend only working with someone very familiar with recent research on eating disorders. Professionals without that training can be more harmful than not seeing anyone. Good luck. I know how hard this is!

I'm sorry OP. I am in the same boat. I have been off for a month and have surgery coming up too, and the lack of exercise is drivng me crazy. I have gained some weight but I also "feel fat." I would not do any specific diet, but maybe work with an eating disorder specialist to find a healthy way to eat that wil allow you to achieve your goals. I also have felt the pull of ED but my kids keep me grounded---I know I dont want to afflict them with body issues.

There are nutritionists and dietitians who specialize in eating disorders - check out “the NPRD” podcast

Good luck

With you - recovered bulimic. It’s a slippery slope because it’s not about the food, it’s the control.

Be careful. Even a dietitian (note: dietitians are degreed vs anyone can say they are a nutritionist) may not be enough. You may want to do it WHILE working with a mental health practitioner to help you keep the ED tendencies in check.

It’s hard to shake that ED voice. My mom is still Bulimic in her 70s… I got help in my 20s but she’s perfectly content with her ED…and also pressures me into old habits.
