What does your student plan to study in college ?

Northwestern University's freshman retention rate is outstanding at 98% (4 year average).

Spectacular setting on shores of Lake Michigan.

What specifically are you interested in knowing?

One thing about NU that's a bit unusual is pretty much every class is taught by a professor and not a TA. We had TAs for labs and problem sections but always as a supplement to the professors, who did the lecture sessions. This is great if you want to do undergrad research as it puts you in direct connection with the professors. I got my name on 5 publications as an undergrad, including as second author.

I really had a great time at NU.

Just curious to hear firsthand accounts of parents and families whose kids have gone through Northwestern recently. Thanks !

It’s one of the most expensive options in America coming in at a whopping $87,864. We are full pay so this fact alone makes it a no-go

You’re obviously too vapid to be admitted to NU. Your kid probably is, too. Focus on the back-up plan.

Isn’t UChicago more expensive?

The campus is pretty.

It is very expensive.

NP. Northwestern is priced similarly to most top 50 privates and likewise offers need-based aid. Those in need of aid should get an estimate from Northwestern's Net Price Calculator.

My junior is also looking at Northwestern.

Pros: defined suburban campus with access to Chicago. Excellent flexibility for changing majors. Evanston is a lot cuter than it was a couple of decades ago. There's a Target within walking distance. As a practical matter, location is ideal... except perhaps for weather.

Cons: cold lake wind (go prepared with outerwear). Sounds like campus is a bit divided with engineering and sciences on the north half, art/theater on the south half.

OP, go to the search bar at the top of the forum and search Northwestern. There has been more than one thread in the past few months alone. Also browse the Northwestern subreddit and the subforum at College Confidential.

Nope. Northwestern has been singled out as one of the most expensive since at least 2011. I remember when it broke $83K a year ahead of all other universities in the U.S. https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/3-prestigious-midwest-colleges-rank-among-top-10-most-expensive-private-universities/2728474/.

The school is beautiful and everyone I have ever known who went there loves it.
And it seems to only be going up reputation wise
