How is teacher turnover looking out there?

How is morale? This has been a hard couple of years. Turnover of teachers looks bad.

These threads keep getting deleted. Which makes me think the OP continues to post on the thread she starts.
As a teacher who JUST left DCPS I guess I’m not sure what good ‘yeah it sucks’ thread is good for.
Teaching is hard. Teaching in dc government is nearly impossible. I left- because after 15 years I couldn’t take another day. But I’m hopeful that others can.
The kids of DC need good teachers.

I’m with you. I left after 14 years. With the threads being posted about what’s going on this year, I am glad. Kids need better but not at the expense of stag. School staff needs better.

I'm in my 12th year and planning on leaving after this year. I don't think DCPS is prepared for the massive shortage they will be facing next year. Everyone - and I mean everyone, from first years to veterans of 20+ years - is talking about leaving.

This is interesting. I've talked to several teachers at DC charters this year that though last year was horrible and are feeling much better this year.

Have you ever taught in DCPS? I taught in a different Maryland County and even that was way less toxic than DCPS.

Hi there! I replied upthread. I am the 15 year DCPS who quit a month ago. To the MCPS poster warning people against coming your way. I hear you. Schools are hard. But nothing is like DCPS. Trust me- once you guys roll into IMPACT we can chat.
FWIW I quit DCPS with zero days notice. And did not have a job lined up. I was swooped up, almost instantaneously by a ‘Big 5/3’ private school in the area. It’s a lovely- supportive- and kind place to teach. Just teach.
And at several points in the interview process what was said to me was ‘if you can teach in DCPS- you can survive anywhere’

Ps. I never once had to explain ‘why’ I left DCPS or why I even left mid-year. No one has to ask questions when the answers are obvious

Could you share how the pay compares to DCPS? That’s my big worry, that it will be a huge pay cut that I can’t take at the moment. It really sucks being in a job just for a paycheck.

Second this question - would love to know about what pay and benefits are like in neighboring counties. I'm a 4th year teacher who is really feeling the burnout and I fear the only way to survive is to ignore all the demands from admin.

It’s probably going to be less than DCPS but it’s better to make the move earlier than later. Stay in DCPS 5 years or you lose all the money you put into your pension. Then pick a state to do the rest of your years so you keep contributing to the same state system. Another reason is that some counties don’t give you all your years of experience. Montgomery County only lets you start at step 7, 8, or 9 depending on your degree. From the high end of the DCPS salary steps it’s a 30-40k cut. I think PG removed this from the contract. Anne Arundel gives credit for up to 20 years. Haven’t looked at any other counties.

On the up side, you’ll feel less stressed.
