Talk to me about Oakcrest

So we are not a Catholic family, we are Christian. Not particularly conservative in the political sense (we believe anybody should be able to love whomever they want regardless of gender, for example) but we are conservative in how we are raising our children: very little technology, no dating before 16, dressing modestly, etc— point is, we have traditional Christian values for our children, which is why we are even considering Catholic schools. However I have heard some unnerving things about Oakcrest and a lot of the teachers beliefs that they push on students. Our daughter is hopeful to go to the school for middle school if not high school, so we are just trying to gather information now before we actually apply in future years. I would really appreciate hearing from currently enrolled (or graduates from the last few years) about your opinion of the school. Positives, negatives, anything in between greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am Catholic and send my kids to a Catholic K-8. I would not consider Oakcrest for my daughter. It is super conservative.

Oakcrest is authentically Catholic which you don’t find much these days, even among Catholics that send their kids to Catholic K-8. We’re applying for next year.

What do you mean by authentically Catholic? Opus Dei? And how does this translate to daily teaching?

By authenticating Catholic I mean they follow the Church teachings. Teaching anti abortion stance being the most prominent one. But also, a deep adherence to the sacraments, mass, confession, adoration. It is not Catholic lite.

the website of this school says it is guided by the teachings of Opus Dei - this is essentially catholic fundamentalists - I am catholic and would not send my kids there but its a personal decision

If the teachers beliefs are in line with the Catholic Church than I would expect them to loudly teach and share them.

OP- I would visit the school and have DC shadow for a day. Also attend the open house. In the end, DD elected not to go to the school but only b/c she wanted a larger student body. The girls I know there are very many intelligent and very, very nice.

My DD is looking as well. Non practicing Christian family but DD is very focused on Science and prefers a smaller environment. Seems like a good fit but we will visit and see.

DD has visited multiple schools in the area so far. She has shown amazing insight on campus feel/if she would fit in etc and even picked up on things we totally missed.

Based on this, we are letting her make the choice and we will support wherever she chooses (and if she gets in). We are not allowing our political/religious beliefs to be part of this process. We have done what we can and given her the tools to judge what the right path is for HER. Whether we agree with it her choice or not, it's time to let her follow her path and we will always support and be there if she wants to change course.

From that perspective, we feel that Oakcrest may work for her, but it is her choice.

Wait, you're not even Catholic and thinking about doing this? It's seriously catholic. I know only one Episcopalian family that tried it and they left.

We have never forced anything on her re political or religious views. We have always just given her the tools and support she needs. She did attend a Christian based after school care for a couple of years.

She is an incredibly independent, thoughtful and fun young woman. She will do well wherever she goes.

Give her the tools to make sure she researches Opus Dei.
