| I have a few coats in very good shape but the zipper is broken (one was a brand new kids coat). I'd donate them, but would need to have the zippers replaced first. What would that cost? |
Do not repair something for a donation. |
| Check for pricing at your local cleaners. |
| Your money is probably better spent doing a toys for tots or something |
| Unless it's a coat from a manufacturer that will repair it for a nominal cost (like LLBean) it's going to be hard to find someone. I have a puffer coat I love and I have taken it to many dry cleaners/tailors. They all say to buy a new coat and trash it. That it's not worth the cost of repair. I hate this idea and the coat is still hanging on a hook in the back of my office. |
| When I called a few places earlier this week it was $65 - $80 because it is a long length coat. |
| Why don't you call a few places and ask? |
| I recently had a purse zipper fixed for $20 at a shoe repair shop. |
| Donate the repair cost to the charity, landfill the costs. If it’s new and the zipper broke, it was a bad purchase. |

Replacing a zipper on a kid’s coat (I’m thinking puffer type) will probably cost more than buying a new coat on sale at old navy, Target, kohl’s, Amazon, or the annual Macy’s coat sale. There’s the cost of the zipper, plus the time it takes to neatly remove the old zipper and replace it with a new one. That’s likely to cost more than a new coat that could easily cost less than $20. This is probably only worth doing if you can provide the labor yourself or know someone who’s willing to do it for free. Unless these are very special or high quality coats, the cost of repairing them is higher than the cost of replacing them.

Here’s a link to an old post about the coat sale. Very good to know about for those of us interested in making donations — as well as doing our own shopping. https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/927485.page#18588274 |
You sound like a jerk. If you're donating, it would be nice to donate something that works. Otherwise it's trash. |
Maybe, but I’ve replaced coat zippers, and there’s just no way a kid’s coat with a busted zipper is worth fixing to donate. People need to get over this notion that some poor sole wants their garbage, and instead focus their attention on how to quit buying the garbage in the first place. If the zipper broke while the coat looks new, it’s not a good coat. Whatever it costs to repair the coats, any charity could do more with that cash than with the repaired coats. But OP wants to pat herself on the back, so, this again. |
| If I bought a cheep ass coat like the most of you.i would probably throw it in the trash with your coats but it's a Harlin, it's a Genuine Shearling. It cost over a thousand dollars |
| How would we know!? Go to your local dry cleaner and ask them |
