Does APS have a shelter in place plan for a nuclear situation?

You’re supposed to go to a basement, which I assume the schools don’t have. Do they have a plan? Also, everyone in the building would need to stay there for 24-72 hours, and they’d need to somehow keep out the parents who run to the school to try to get kids out. Is there any plan or messaging, or are we just going to hope for the best?

This is OP. Nope. And I’m not even very anxious. But I do believe in having a plan. And I suspect APS doesn’t have one.

The odds of most of us surviving a blast centered at the Capitol or Pentagon is pretty low. Even if there were bomb shelters the odds of having time to get the kids there and safe in time are slim.

Not to mention when they emerge all their parents would be dead.

This isn't true. We have the technology to blow up any incoming bombs before they reach us.

Do you want to do the stupid duck and cover drills from the 80s? You don't really need to plan for a nuclear blast in the DC area as you will literally be vaporized.

This is the problem. If people think there is nothing that can be done, APS won’t know what to do. There is a non-negligoble risk, and there are steps we can take to mitigate exposure before detonation (after early warning systems give warning) or after detonation. I don’t know why no one is giving the public or our instructions (schools, nursing facilities, hospitals) this information for emergency preparedness.

The schools can't do anything about having no basements. Sheltering in place is the best option, and the exposure would depend on the individual school site (how big the windows are, areas that are interior, etc.). Schools have general shelter in place plans but nothing, AFAIK, in any local district that extends to the plan if we have to shelter for days at a time--most things I have read said a shelter in place order would likely last 24 hours, and schools do have bathrooms and cafeterias.

This is a good question for central office and school board reps.
