Reminisce about the old Dupont Circle with me

Anonymous
Remember when Dupont Circle was slightly run-down, low rent, and not filled with chain stores and restaurants? I'm talking the 90's. I rented my turret apartment for $625. Ate at Food for Thought and Burrito Brothers. There was a discount clothing store on Connecticut near R Street with Chinese or Indian made clothes for $5/$10/$15 I loved to shop at. Two movie theaters although at the Heinous Janus you had to avoid sitting behind a pillar.

It was such a great neighborhood late 80s/early 90s.

Anyone remember Cafe Rondo/the Daiquiri Factory? The owner was Louis (heard he fled the country for tax evasion) and the bartender was Yahti.

They served us long before we were legal. Good times!

I remember when Pizzeria Paradiso opened in 1991. It was a tiny space, a few doors down in a row house.

For me DuPont circle’s soul are the giant chessboards …

We used to go to the movie theater and book shop there - are they gone now?

I lived there and would walk to get my groceries. First to marvelous market then to Pesce for the freshest fish. The original Meiwa (down the steps) was a favorite

That stupid bookstore where I used to do foreign language exchanges

Aw! Childe Harold and Zorbas! I lived in DuPont Circle for a few years after grad school. I’d never lived right in a city before, and it was SO cool to me that I got to do so. Spent my weekends at Second Story Books, Kramer Books and Afterwards (those are still there, fortunately) and Books A Million.

The streets are overrun with homeless camps now.
