Unfortunately, I'm facing a new autoimmune condition in addition to my current health issues. I love my current job but want to be realistic about needing time off to find the right medication regimen and take care of my health. What are the possible options? My job is non classroom based
so some flexibility but do need to be at schools at least 1-5 hours most days of the week.
- work part time as much as I can and then use my own leave followed.by the sick leave bank- I would lose my current position potentially if I take more than 90 days, correct?
- If shit hits the fan with my medical conditions, how hard is it to qualify for Maryland state disability?
- any other options I'm not thinking of?

Are you in a union? These types of questions are best directed to your union rep and/or HR to figure your benefits.

As far as your position being there when you want to return, I think it will depend on how critical it is to quickly fill your roll, how valuable you were to your admin, and how easy it is to fill. I’ve seen people come back to a position after being out for more than 4 months due to medical reasons.

FMLA requires you get a reasonably similar position back, but it will likely not be the one you had. Beyond that, yeah - check with your union.

You can take FMLA leave for up to a year with a qualifying condition. If you take more than 60 days of leave (duty days, don't include weekends/holidays), then you may lose your position at your current school - but it's really up to your supervisor. Best thing to do is get in touch with ERSC.

If you can, talk to your supervisor first to see if they want to save your current position for you. I’ve had two leaves longer than 60 days. In the first case, I didn’t want to return to the position, but my supervisor never advertised it so I was stuck. In the second case, I wanted to stay and discussed that desire, plus all of the ways I was an asset with my supervisor when I told him I would need months of leave to address a life threatening condition. He held my position for me.

Technically you have 60 days but a supervisor can finagle things to hold your position open (if they like you, if they don't then they will post the position). I personally wouldn't call ERSC first. I had a bad experience with them when I had a few questions about my pregnancy leave - innocent questions because like you I have a non classroom based position and one of my coworkers got hosed with her leave so I was trying to be careful. They called my supervisor and made it seem like I was trying to game the system (they are not allowed to name you but I was one of the only ones pregnant at the time). So I would call the Union first and ask all your questions and once you have a better idea of what may be available then call ERSC.

Intermittent FMLA could also be an option if you are FT. You should also check to see whether your health issues qualify you for ADA protection. I believe both of these give you a little more flexibility.

How long have you worked for MCPS? You can check your MD retirement account here:
https://sra.maryland.gov

It lists your disability retirement benefits. I am not sure how hard it is to qualify. I would pursue that route before just quitting.
