Unfortunately, I'm facing a new autoimmune condition in addition to my current health issues. I love my current job but want to be realistic about needing time off to find the right medication regimen and take care of my health. What are the possible options? My job is non classroom based so some flexibility but do need to be at schools at least 1-5 hours most days of the week. - work part time as much as I can and then use my own leave followed.by the sick leave bank- I would lose my current position potentially if I take more than 90 days, correct? - If shit hits the fan with my medical conditions, how hard is it to qualify for Maryland state disability? - any other options I'm not thinking of?
You can take FMLA leave for up to a year with a qualifying condition. If you take more than 60 days of leave (duty days, don't include weekends/holidays), then you may lose your position at your current school - but it's really up to your supervisor. Best thing to do is get in touch with ERSC.
If you can, talk to your supervisor first to see if they want to save your current position for you. I’ve had two leaves longer than 60 days. In the first case, I didn’t want to return to the position, but my supervisor never advertised it so I was stuck. In the second case, I wanted to stay and discussed that desire, plus all of the ways I was an asset with my supervisor when I told him I would need months of leave to address a life threatening condition. He held my position for me.
