Woods Academy HOS departure?

Anonymous
Our family is considering Woods Academy for next year and just learned the HOS is departing this July. Is there more to the story new families should know about? I know not all transitions are negative but just curious why it was announced now and not a year ago.

Why would it need to be announced a year ago. He is leaving in July, that’s plenty of notice.

Exactly. Most heads of school only announce during the same time frame. HOS of Woods has been there 12 years which is about average for heads of school. There is nothing to add to the story. He will be an empty nester and is ready to move into another phase of his life.

You want him to give a 2 year notice? Do you do that with your jobs?

I'm guessing Head was just appointed as Head of a different school- the timing would be right for that. Very typically of the Head search cycle. Appointed in fall, starts in July. Woods will either scramble to find someone by July or they'll appoint an interim for next year while they complete the search and likely appoint a new Head in Fall 2023 for a July 1, 2024 start. Don't worry, OP - this likely is all very typical, and if there's something atypical about the departure, I'm sure someone will spill the tea here.

OMG, again.

This is getting ridiculous!

We have been there for the past 8 years. No, there is no scandalous reason he’s leaving. I’m sad he’s leaving but understand he wants to try something new before he retires. His three kids are off to college next year and wants a new experience.

This will be good for Woods. Time for a fresh start.

What do you mean?

Nothing to see here. I'm sure the pandemic took a toll and he's ready to do something different. The committee has sent out surveys to current and past families. They are on top of it. It'll be interesting to see which direction they go---high profile fundraiser type, traditional stay the course, diversity advocate, etc.

We are looking at Woods too, and have only heard good things! Excited to visit later this month!

Good lord people. He's been at Woods for 12 years, navigated the pandemic, will have finished the construction/capital plan project, and it makes sense that its a good time for him to move onto his next role. The school has a strong admin, including an assistant head who has many years at woods under her belt, and a year to identify and name a new head.

This is all in order and makes plenty of sense to this Woods parent. I'm not at all worried, but excited to see how the school moves forward!
