My 9th grader wants to run Indoor Track. Are there tryouts for Indoor Track, or does everyone make the team, as in XC?
For XC, they get bussed to the meets. But, my neighbor, whose daughter plays another JV sport, does NOT get a bus to her games. Does Indoor Track get bussed to the meets? According to the County Zone site, it looks like there are just 4 indoor track meets. Is that it? Am I missing anything? Just trying to plan. We're new to the county and not sure how all this works. Thanks for any input! |

Indoor track is mostly for staying in shape. They practice outdoors all winter unless it's icy.
A few years ago, indoor meets took forever at the sports plex in PG. Kids typically ran only one or two events. We drove our kid, showing up an hour or two before their event, leaving an hour or so after. There was a meet at Georgetown Prep that went a bit faster. |
Thanks! I ran Winter Track decades ago and we also ran outdoors in the cold. This was in New England. DC wants to run to just to stay in shape, and also likes the competition of the meets. The website shows 4 meets, all on Tuesdays at 2:30pm. Indoor meets look like they are at BCC / Seneca Valley / Wootton. Do those schools have indoor tracks? |
| Indoor track had tryouts at my kids’ high school (Churchill). The slots are limited in the meets due to space constraints. Therefore, they needed to cut people. Most of the meets were at the Prince George’s County Sportsplex. One was at Georgetown Prep’s indoor track. None of the MCPS schools had their own indoor track. I remember a meet at the Baltimore armory which was too far away. |
+1 on the information about meets. DC’s school doesn’t cut but you go in with the understanding that only a small group will go to the meets, so it’s a large practice squad. They build a lot of camaraderie for outdoor and it keeps them active during the winter. There is usually a competition to see who can go the farthest into the season still in shorts (instead of running tights or sweatpants)
