Indoor track had tryouts at my kids’ high school (Churchill). The slots are limited in the meets due to space constraints. Therefore, they needed to cut people. Most of the meets were at the Prince George’s County Sportsplex. One was at Georgetown Prep’s indoor track. None of the MCPS schools had their own indoor track. I remember a meet at the Baltimore armory which was too far away.
+1 on the information about meets. DC’s school doesn’t cut but you go in with the understanding that only a small group will go to the meets, so it’s a large practice squad. They build a lot of camaraderie for outdoor and it keeps them active during the winter. There is usually a competition to see who can go the farthest into the season still in shorts (instead of running tights or sweatpants)
