DD bored and sad at current all girls school

Anonymous
Basically she feels they are too strict, every day is the same, it’s not the typical high school experience (basically no interactions with boys at all). She’s just so sad but wants to be at a Catholic school. There are only a few co Ed Catholic high schools in the area and most are too far from us. Is St Johns a bro school? Are teachers approachable and can kids meet with them for help?

Everyone we know at St. John's (all girls) loves the school. Most of them are pretty sporty though.

St John’s is coed.

They’ve got a wide variety of students there. Sporty, ROTC, and I don’t think the academic pressure is as tough there as some of the others. They do have a ton of resources for struggling students too. My kids aren’t there but friends kids are and they love it. I would’ve loved it if any of my children chose there.

I have 2DD at SJC. Both are very different, but both really enjoy the experience there. Teachers are definitely approachable.

You are surprised there are no interactions with boys in an all girls school? You realize there are co-ed options available like SJC and Good Counsel? Why did she choose all girls if she wants to interact with boys?

I went to an all girls school and got a great education, but my kids are in co-ed and the boys are funny and really make the classes lively - all the funny stories I hear are because the boys are doing something ridiculous. And my girls are friends with boys and girls, which is a nice dynamic for high school. I enjoy hosting the girls and boys for dinner. Last time they all had pizza here, it was the boys that cleaned everything up and brought the dishes to the kitchen.

My girls love love love SJC. My oldest got into all girls school too but at the last minute decided to got to SJC. One is sporty and one isn't. The non sporty one joined Cadet Corp which is an amazing program and really loves that.

Like all schools the teachers can be hit or miss but we have found that they are all approachable.

I know this year there seemed to be quite a few transfers which hasn't been the case in previous years. It may be worth reaching out to them to see about a shadow day and/or transfer option.

Clarifying - we only know girls that go to the co-ed St. John's.

Curious what you email by strict? My DD all girls school is very flexible and joyful.

Mind telling us the school?

This isn’t that hard to figure out. Probably Stone Ridge or Visi.

DP. This is exactly why my daughter wanted to go to an independent, all girls school. She is a serious student and was so sick of the boys being loud and disrespectful. She is very happy.

+1 My daughter loves the freedom and vibes at her secular, all girls school campus. Plus, I visited Holton for an Open House and the girls there were also very joyful - the HOS was in a classroom dancing (not sure why) but the whole campus seemed full of life. I’m truly sorry your DD isn’t happy. You should start working on the application for St. John’s. But you also should have her visit a few other secular, coed campuses. There are so many great Catholic colleges - she can do secular HS and go back for college. Good luck!

I highly encourage you to sign up and go to the open house. (It will fill up - so sign up now)
Go and see for yourself if it is a fit for your DD.
There will be current students there to ask questions.
They will have a few panels and students will share their experiences.
