I have my own beliefs and opinions as a Christian.
I don’t believe that people who aren’t Christian should speak for me and try to portray all Christians as bigoted and oppressive. I don’t think I should speak as another religious person, or as an atheist or agnostic, and use the worst stereotypes and attitudes espoused by some within another religion, or in another culture, and disparage Muslims or atheists or Jewish people or agnostics, etc. Can people not speak for themselves anymore? If someone who is a Christian says something bigoted or oppressive, can we leave that at their doorstep, and not assume it pretend everyone who is a Christian believes as that person does? |
| *or, not it, my autocorrect spoke for me |
| You can speak for yourself but you can’t speak for the leaders of your church and you can’t erase what they say and do.you can’t erase that your money and support encourages and supports their actions. |
This is a perfect example. Now: I am going to speak for all Muslims and say Muslims are pro beheading “infidels” and pro throwing gay men off buildings to their (undeserved and horrific) deaths. Just stop speaking for people you don’t know, and assuming everyone is the worst caricature of their religion. pp, you don’t even know what my religion is. Tell me what my religion is and my beliefs are, please, because you are so comfortable and confident in speaking for me and telling me who and what I believe and support. |
As soon as you can admit the leaders of your religion, no matter what it is, are using it for political gain, and do horrific things to people like Muslims do to gay people and women in the name of the religion we will all be better off. Unless you are in a cult, you have the right to speak against the leaders of your church when they do horrible things … if you don’t you are helping your religion become a cult. |
So, ALL religions are used by their leaders for political gain? And ALL religions do horrific things to people? ALL religions hurt women and children and gay people in the name of religion? And religious people who don’t admit that are cult members? Are you kidding? |

There's very little clarity in OP's post, except only that she wants to restrict the opinions and expressions of others.
OKAY. |
No, express your own opinions and thoughts. Don’t presume to speak for other people. |
|
OP, I hope you recognize that many of those who voice criticisms may also identify as Christians themselves.
If you are secure in your sense that no one can speak for you but you yourself, then I’m not sure what your concern is. As to your last bit, historically and currently, Christianity has been used to justify some horrifyingly bigoted and oppressive things. Since those things are against the actual teachings of Christ, my personal stance is to call out those who seem to be mis-labeling themselves. |
I never said all. If the shoe fits, if not your panties would’ve be in a bunch. |
Speak for your own beliefs, please. Christians don’t always agree, have the same beliefs, etc. |
“As soon as you can admit the leaders of your religion, no matter what it is, are using it for political gain, and do horrific things to people like Muslims do to gay people and women in the name of the religion we will all be better off.” This sounds like you are speaking for all people in all religions. It is a bigoted and awful statement that speaks to every person and every religion. Unless you are in a cult, you have the right to speak against the leaders of your church when they do horrible things … if you don’t you are helping your religion become a cult. If a religious leader does terrible things, they are or should be arrested and/or relieved of their duties, posts, appointments, etc. Yes, I am happy to add my voice should that happen. But don’t call all religious people “cult members” because you don’t like ALL religion. You are a bigoted and an anti-religious poster who should not be allowed to leave such bigoted and awful comments about religious people and religion. |
If a religious leader does terrible things and are not arrested and convicted due to their political contributions, money, connections and you still support them you are part of the problem. If you silently let your religion do horrible thing because if you speak up you will be ostracized you are part of a cult (if you don’t realize they I’m sad for you). If your religion has no political affiliations, never does horrible things, treats POC /lgbt/women as equals maybe the comments are not directed at “you”, if “your” religion does treat people respectfully… aka BLM, women equally in leadership roles, lgbt Marry, move on, comments are not directed at “you”. |
That’s what I’ve done. I’ve alluded to that twice in these three sentences. “My personal stance” means just that. |

If you want to defend christianity, or the way you live your christianity and your personal beliefs, do it on its own merits rather than pointing to the religion of the commenter.
