| My puppy started nipping my kids clothes. I watched a Cesar episode and started the touch to redirect the dog. Now my puppy is getting agitated with me, barking and lunging at me. Oh boy. I am an experienced large breed dog owner but this small breed puppy is making me so confused. We are having a trainer come next week for a session with me and the kids. |

What does Cesar Milan say to do if the dog barks and lunges at you?
The surest way to fail at any training approach is to just do part of it. |
| Cesar Milan is an idiot. What kind of small breed? Does it have herding genes? If so, you may have been misinterpreting the nipping as aggression. |
Like stand with confidence ignore the dog and touch it’s side to redirect the dog and make that sound. My puppy is now easily agitated and borderline agressive. His breeder did only positive reinforcement but the strange thing is she recommended Cesar on her page so I followed his advice. |
| Cesar is terrible. Don't listen to anything he says. His methods are cruel. |

Can I undo it?? I was the king of the castle with my retrievers, now I feel so guilty I ruined this expensive love muffin puppy. |
| Small dogs can be neurotic and difficult to train, especially compared to laid back large breeds. |
| How old is the puppy? Lots go through that nippy / barky stage. I would suggest a good trainer as well. I'd also consider trying to socialize him with other puppies if possible. The Petco near me had puppy playtime on the weekends with a trainer. |

Take a class with Blue Ridge Canine, they will come to you. Use treats to direct the dog to do what you want. Throw a treat in the crate, "go to bed". Dog goes in. You don't touch him. Make dog sit and wait for food. Also to go in or out of the door or the car. If dog hurts you in any way, say OW and all fun interaction stops. Keep a leash on him at all times so you can control him without touching him. Redirect his mount to a toy. Teach the dog to "SPEAK" so that then you can teach him "QUIET" Talk to your dog about what you are doing in simple language such as she uses for her talking dog, like you would a toddler: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8k2upr9vCE So "we did walk this morning, walk later. Settle now" Name the things that you give/use with the dog, like the leash, food, water, poop, toy, treat, etc. etc. They understand a lot more than you think. |
Thanks!! Yes this poodle mix is so smart now I know why they are in the circus. So different from my labs which were big sweethearts. |
9 weeks old, we’ve had him about 12 days |
Avoid Cesar Millan whose methods are cruel. He is awful. Find a positive training-based trainer whose methods are designed to cause the puppy to want to please you (vs. be afraid of you). |
| Stop with the Cesar Milan. You want positive training only. I agree on Zach George. We loved training classes with Your Dog’s Friend. They have great webinars, too. |
Of course! Your dog is only a puppy - still learning. And poodle mixes are generally very smart. Each time he nips, I'd say "ouch" loudly, pull my hand away and say "No biting, Barkley!" and then hand him one of his toys. Never a new toy, because you don't want to imply a present for bad behavior. Just "if you want to nip, here's what you can hip on." When he barks at you turn your back to him and stay still, until he calms down. |
