So our fifth grader is a little disorganized at best, in fact, we are getting her evaluated for ADHD. She is a good student, and generally wants to do well, and has gotten all good marks through elementary school. One thing we are still working on with her, is turning in projects for assignments. She gets homework assignments in paper or online and will forget to check one of the other.
We are considering having her go to private school next year because we think we may need some further support from the teacher and the smaller classes of a private school would help that and maybe hopefully build her executive function. We are zone for DHMS, and have good heard good things so we’re wondering how much support there is for building executive function, if a student forget to turn in assignment, will a note go home to the parents or an email go out through parent view? Or is it really up to the students and it’s kind of a cliff as far as responsibility goes? |
There's no HW anymore in middle school...
But you can keep track of "missing assignments" by having an observer account in canvas, and looking on parentvue. No, the teacher will NOT email you. Can you imagine doing that for 4 classes of children? |
Students are supposed to have about 70 minutes of homework a night plus read for 30 minutes. Parent should be notified of all assignments in Parentvue
https://dorothyhamm.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/47/2020/06/Updated-Rising-6th-Grade-FAQs.pdf Now my kid finishes all their homework in class, I guess the block schedule has some non instruction time built in, but ParentVUE does seem to have a lot of assignments. |
I mean it’s really easy, mark it as missed in Canvas or what not, and the system can notify via ParentVUE — isn’t that happening? But the FAQ PP posted says they would get 30 min per core class of homework, did you see an updated policy? |
I went to BTSN. |
Wait, at BTSN they stated that their is NO HOMEWORK??? |
I assume that changes in 7th and 8th grade? |
There is definitely homework at DHMS. But most students are able to finish it either in class or in Phoenix time. Not including the bigger projects. |
How are they able to finish 90 minutes worth of homework in class time, they are only in school 6 hours, shouldn’t most of that be instruction, discussion, or interactive work? |
Why is the BTSN trolling me, does it differ per grades? |
I think a lot of private schools would teach this better, but if that's the only reason you're considering private I'd just have her do a study skills class or something. I think you'd get a lot more bang for your buck. |
In our experience, it wasn’t 90 min/day every single day. One class (Phoenix time) is designed to be used for homework or to get help from teachers. |
Maybe a different school? |
DHMS utilizers a planner system for helping kids keep track of their work. Almost all teachers use it to reinforce its use with the kids (get out your planner, write X); teachers will check it.

What are some good atudy skills classes? A lot of them seem kind of over the top, we don’t need Ivy admissions here, we just want out DD to manage independently eventually. |
