Outside math enrichment

Seems like more and more kids are enrolling in RSM for enrichment and to get ahead in class. Or maybe it was always the case. Does your child do RSM or mathnasium? If so what grade?

Yes quite a few kids enrolled in rsm at our W feeder elementary school

My 5th grader just started RSM because even with compacted math, she was bored. There are so many kids in her MCPS 5/6 class that the teacher can’t differentiate for more advanced learners. We haven’t done any outside enrichment before, but right now RSM is great. It has one-fifth of the kids in the 5/6 math and expects much more from them.

But how does that help your DC not be bored in class? If anything I would expect she would be even more bored as RSM would cover topics faster?

This is why the achievement gap will become wider and wider

I am curious as to why did you choose rsm vs says mathnasium or kumon?

Oh she's definitely bored in class still. But she'll actually be learning something outside of class.

We chose RSM based on the recommendation of a family member who lives out of the area. I had never even heard of it before. RSM has a location near us, so it's pretty convenient--if it weren't, we would have looked at other options.

Yup. Because they stopped true tracking in math the advanced kids don't get what they need on terms of enrichment in class. Its just more worksheets a little harder, not ahead. So they are still bored on class but do outside work so they aren't "of math" overall. They need to bring back separate math classes grade 2 and up instead of 30 min pullouts a week. And no my kid isnt all that advanced but at 95% MAP and shes bored in class.

Also its cool now and very ‘in’ thing to go to rsm.

My kids do AoPS because they enjoy math and MCPS math is simply terrible.

Look at the recent stats for the Algebra MCAP. They are REALLY bad. MCPS isn’t teaching our kids Math well. Parents want another option.

And Compacted Math in grades 4 and 5 simply means that the class just skips over material and moves a bit farther. Doesn’t offer enrichment and doesn’t go any farther in depth.

MCPS has been exclusively focused on Equity, not Excellence. So, MCPS has zero incentive to offer Math enrichment in ES and MS.

Yes, the preps arms race is on like donkey kong. Some people would like pretend it isn't happening but if you fail to engage your kid will be left in the dust.

They hadn't given the MCAP before that year. It's a poor indicator since all previous years with kids did much better with the national PARCC using C2.0. They need to stick with national tests and stop making up their own unproven benchmarks.
