If you love Tana French

Trying to rekindle my love of reading. The only books I’ve been able to get into in the last couple years are Tana French’s detective novels. I like that they hook me but don’t feel like a brain drain—the writing is really pretty (by my standards). They feel a little more substantial than a typical dime novel thriller series, I guess.

Some other authors I enjoy off the top of my head are Donna Tartt and Gillian Flynn. I like things that are a bit dark.

So I haven’t read Marple yet, but it is modern female mystery writers writing miss Marple stories.

It has been awhile since I read French, but I read a lot of irish mysteries series this summer on vacation (for some reason I like the insight I get into a place from mystery books). In order of how much I recall them being like French:

brian mcgilloway - set along the border so these held extra interest for me
Dervla mctiernan - she also wrote a book set in the US, which I didn’t really like
Sharon Dempsey
Geraldine Hogan
- the last two may not be up to French, but compelling enough reads given I was exploring a subgenre.

Kate Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie series - the first one is Case Histories. Beautiful writing in the crime/mystery genre.

Absolutely agree! Some of her other books are a little heavy, but the Jackson Brodie series is great. Also try Laura Lipman’s books and the Strike series by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling).

If you like darker, well-written mysteries, I recommend Jo Nesbo and the Harry Hole series. Definitely not "pretty" but in my mind they are the best in that genre.

Along those lines would be the Adrian McKinty books with the protagonist Sean Duffy. They are set in Belfast. The books are fast-paced and riveting; they make an excellent murder mysteries with fascinating insight into what it was like to live in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.
