St Johns College Prep on Military Road

Hi what can you tell me about this school? I have a reserved but smart and super kind girl who is interested in going to SJC. We live in Bethesda, so a lot would depend on a carpool as her brother goes to high school in the opposite direction. Is it a party school? Is it too big for someone who is a bit on the quieter side or intellectual side? What’s the partner community like?

Define "partner community".

You could just search this forum. Lots to read that will answer your general questions.

There are like a thousand threads on St Johns in this forum. Do a search.

What does partner community mean?

St John’s College HS

And

St John’s Catholic Prep HS

are two different schools. I think you want the first one which is in DC but adding prep to your search will mess it up.

Parent community not partner community.

I already did a search and I don’t see answers to my questions.

Is it true that only athletes are valued there?

We went there for an open house visit and my son for shadow day. He felt like it was big, however, he applied for the The De La Salle Scholars Program that sort of creates a smaller group of students within the school. According to the school, the program "provides the highest-achieving students an opportunity to mature intellectually beyond the traditional classroom. De La Salle Scholars emerge as young men and women who are faithful, engaged and committed to progress in the world." I think there might have been an additional piece he had to do during the application process in order to be considered for this. In the end, he was accepted into it but we chose another school for many reasons. It just wasn't the right fit for him or us as a family. I think shadows days will allow your daughter to see where she feels comfortable. Have you considered Stone Ridge? They seem to have a small community. But I could be wrong.

Everyone is valued.
It is a large school with a strong sports culture. My non-sporty daughter loves it.
Have your child do a shadow day and see it if feels right.

Depending on what part of Bethesda you are in - you can take the Red line to Friendship Heights and take the shuttle bus to St. Johns. Or there is a bus stop at Old Georgetown Road a little outside the beltway

Parent community is strong

Are most of the families in dc or are there families in Bethesda? Do people carpool?

How is the boys soccer team?

Are classes lecture style or experiential at all? It seems old school but I may have the wrong impression.

Search "SJC" and add whatever word to your search query and you'll get a ton of answers. I just came back from Back To School Night for my Freshman where we met with all the teachers. It's nothing Old school about it. Very modern. They are teaching the brightest kids. Each year 250-280 kids out of 1,000+ are admitted but search SJC on this forum and you'll find hundreds of threads and thousands of replies dating back years. Good luck.

Lots of carpools. Boys soccer is very good. Upper half of WCAC, sometimes near the top. Better than most good public teams. Classes are pretty traditional teaching with the exception of heavy emphasis on iPad use.

Don’t they run a bussing program from many nodes around the area? Do that.
