Question about food delivery apps

Anonymous
This sounds weird, but I've never done Door Dash or Uber eats or one of those apps. Dh is out of town and we have an insane day tomorrow, no way I'll be able to cook dinner. I asked the kids if they wanted food from of the 2 places I could pick up on my way home from work and they weren't enthused 🙄 I can't eat pizza.

I'm thinking of getting one of the food delivery apps and trying to make it work for tomorrow.

Any thoughts on which app is better? Cheaper? More reliable? Any tips for me?

Please be kind, I'm really exhausted right now and just need a helping hand. Thank you.

Uber Eats or Door Dash are fine. For me, Door Dash is less expensive, but only because my law firm got a deal with them for us.

My tip for you involves tips: tip at least 18% - the drivers will look at the tip (which you put in before you submit the order) and if it's low, they won't bother.

Delivery tip: Plan to order an hour before you want the food to arrive. And know that some restaurants refuse modifications on UE and DD. So like, I can't get a salad without salad dressing, for example, even though if I went to the restaurant in person I could.

Figure out where you want to order first, then se if they offer their own delivery or use a specific one. Eg Chipotle delivers through their own app.

Agree with this. We use DoorDash and Uber eats pretty interchangeably and I haven’t really noticed one being cheaper than the other or better service. It’s pretty much luck of the draw, so we pick the place first and see if they participate with one or the other.

This. I often do not even know which service I am using. Another tip - do not order anything that needs to be super hot or fresh and expect it could take longer than expected. Sometimes they pick up ypur food and drive 10 minutes in the wrong direction to do another delivery.

Keep your phone handy if you’re doing a contactless delivery, because some drivers don’t ring your doorbell or knock on your door when they deliver the food, even if you ask them to in the delivery instructions. They just text you to let you know your food has been delivered.

I don’t necessarily tip a set percentage. The driver is doing the same work for the same cost regardless of whether I’ve ordered a bagel or filet mignon. I mean, I never tip less than $5 and I do tip more when the meal costs more, but part of my calculation when tipping is how much driving was involved. If the food came from 5 miles away, I tip more than if it came from a mile away because that’s a bigger time investment for the driver and more wear and tear on their car. The DD app will give you suggestions for tips, but you can customize the amount. Sometimes the suggestions are unreasonably low and sometimes they’re ridiculously high, but most of the time, they’re pretty reasonable.

It’s not uncommon for restaurants to fail to include part of the order. DoorDash makes it super easy to get a refund. In the app, you can click on orders and then the specific order with an issue. From there, click Help and you’ll have options to select to indicate what was wrong with the order. You can click the item that was missing and they’ll refund that portion of your bill.

Have a friend send you a referral link to sign up. Both you and they will get some kind of credit or discount.

If your schedule is tight you may want to try ordering ahead of time and selecting the time you wish your meal to be delivered. I've had great luck with this on GrubHub. Food always arrives on time, if not 10-15 mins early and is piping hot. You can place orders well in advance that gives everyone a chance to choose what they want but eliminates the work in the moment.

OP, what neighborhood are you in? We might be able to make specific suggestions.
