Obama is sending 1,200 National Guard

Troops to the Border. He is also asking Congress for billions of dollars to support the borders. Now, if we can only start prosecuting employers who hire illegal residents in this country, the country would be well on its way for an effective immigration reform policy. People only risk their lives to come here and live in the shadows because of greedy, law breaking and unscrupulous employers.

When I saw the title of this thread, I was hoping that it would be about sending personnel to the Gulf to help contain the oil spill.

I wish Obama would take over the operation and create some kind of emergency Manhatten Project-type group of the best scientists and engineers to get that thing capped, stat.

1200 national guard troops works out to about one troop per every 2 miles if they work 24x7x365. If they work 40 hour shifts, it is about one every eight miles.

Ditto. Where are the troops needed to enforce the laws that BP is so flagrantly disregarding?

I believe I read in one of the newspapers that the feds are sought of hamstrung on this issue. Apparently, by law, they must allow BP to take the lead and all the feds can do is oversight. Also, I don't think the feds have the knowledge to take over and subdue this catastrophe. First, the law has to be changed. Two, the federal government agency that was watchdog over oil and gas needs to be swept clean. Apparently the employees were revolving door employees between the agency and the oil companies. I think some actually had intimate relationships with the people they were suppose to oversee. Third, well I don't know about three, but it appears that the feds may not be any better than BP right now. And that is a pity.

Which is why AZ has been asking for triple that amount

I believe the Coast Guard has enforcement authority for compliance with regulations (like the EPA instruction regarding the type of dispersants they are meant to be using) but I don't know how that would pan out in actuality.

Don't worry, we will all pay, and pay, and pay.

Please, they ask for 6K troops to help enforcement, and Obama sends 1200 to provide clerical and interpretive information (research, monitor drone feed). Underwhelmed.

Why are they asking? Why doesn't the governor deploy the national guard? They report to her.

My understanding is that Coast Guard has the ocean, EPA has environmental disasters on land, and FEMA has management of disasters affecting people.

You do know that the govenor of each state can mobilize their respective national guard units. So, if AZ, CA and TX really wanted the NG they could have called them up without the president of the USA.

Wouldn't that be unconstitutional, though? Immigration is supposedly a federal issue. Not that that would stop Arizona of course....

Perhaps posse comitatus? Military cannot
police without authorization from constitution or congress
