Has anyone read a book that completely changed their health or outlook? I am in my 40s and increasingly open to changing my lifestyle and embracing new ways of eating, thinking & caring for myself. I want to turn the clock back and become more vigorous, energetic, and lose some extra pounds. |
I did! Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer. I wasn't really seeking to make a change at the time, so I was surprised by how much the information in the book affected my day to day choices. |
Not a book but felt like a book. Signing up for Noom. Daily lessons that took about 10 minutes. Completely changed my life. Lost 50 pounds over 2 years and haven't gained back any of it. |
Beck Diet Book for weight loss |
Reading "Next Level" by Dr. Stacy Sims and I'm rethinking a lot re menopause and peri menopause. |
Healthy Habits Suck by Dayna Lee-Baggley is good. I should reread it. She has a very grounded approach to recognizing that life is messy but that taking care of yourself can be its own reward. |
Do you still use Noom? Or did you let the subscription expire but just feel like the lessons stay with you? |
Intuitive Eating (the book). Understanding that I don’t need to control the size of my body has been life-changing. |
The Body Keeps the Score |
The Wildatarian Cookbook by Teri Cochrane (she’s a local nutrition/wellness person). Her approach to diet has been life changing for my family. |
The latter. I didn't finish the lessons. I did a few months of them then just used the app to log my calories for a few months. Stopped counting calories, listened to my body instead, started moving a lot more, lost another 20 pounds. |
The Women's Heart Book: The Complete Guide to Keeping Your Heart Healthy by Pashkow and Libov |
Michael pollan : in defense of food and the omnivore dilemma. Great inspiration to focus on real nutritious food and moderation “eat food, not too much, mostly plants”. Seems obvious but reading the books really made a difference for me.
And also : Gary Taubes and Pr Lustig. I didn’t read the full books but i read their NYtimes opinion pieces + book reviews and abstracts. They are big anti sugar crusaders but I found most interesting was their explanation of the role of insulin and how to manage insulin to avoid weight gain. |
Thanks, OP here, wow this looks so interesting. I’ll add it to my “to read” list. |
Thanks all! Keep the recommendations coming. I’m not just looking for diet books (I probably posted in the wrong forum), but books that address living life to the fullest, spiritually, changing mind sets, joy, being adventurous and so on. |
