What does it mean when a school tracks interest?

Anonymous
Do they literally have a dashboard that counts the applicant's touchpoints with the school?

Is there some kind of "interest score" perhaps?

They can see if their emails have been opened, or just deleted. They know if you've signed up for tours, that kind of thing.

They have teams that are scouring your social media.

I don't know too many details but the answer is maybe sort of.

Schools can track whatever they want, but they might have to pay for higher levels of monitoring. My particular area tracks more analytics out of interest and strategy concerns. But its not tied to an individual student (though I suppose if one prospective student was geographically isolated that could be figured out).

They have software that tracks students by their email address and whether they've opened/clicked an email, visited a website, which page they visited on the website, whether they filled out a form to request info or sign up for a tour, etc.

How do their computer programs determine if you have spent time on the website? Clicking website links from emails, or something else? Can they track website browsing to a specific person otherwise?

Looks like you have never heard of machine learning and LTE algorithms— but have a nice campus visit.

You can search this forum to find some articles on how these work. And LTE even goes beyond demonstrated interest. It’s a big business.

The software uses cookies to track the student's activities on the website. They become a "known" visitor after filling out a form, such as joining the mailing list. Then the software can assign a numeric score to the student's interest.

For example, here is how one software program for higher ed describes itself:

Prospective Student Profile
Understand and analyze all your prospective students browsing history, and engagement with your digital assets at every stage of the enrollment process to personalize your outreach based on their behavior and interests.

Data analytics on email links ARE tracked, it’s called the Click Through Rate in Digital Marketing. There’s a new tool called Google which you could use to educate yourself on it.
