As my kids get older I find myself referring to my husband a lot to other kids. And I’m always not sure how to refer to him? (We are married and are both Larlo’s parents)
A. “My husband is going to fix Larlo’s bike” B. “John is going to fix Larlo’s bike” (they don’t know that Larlo’s dad is John though) C. “Mr. John is going to fix Larlo’s bike” D. “Larlo’s dad is going to fix Larlo’s bike” All of them sound sort of awkward because they’re kids. Which do you use the most? |
| I refer to him as Thomas, or Tom. |
| First name (if we know them well) or Larlo’s dad if we don’t. |
| B or D |
| We don’t care to have children addressing us by our first names, so I’d say Larlo’s dad. D. |
This. So B or D. |
| Mr. Marty |
| B or D |
This, or “Mr Smith” |
| We call adults Mr. Firstname in front of kids (unless they have asked for a different form of address—for example, our neighbor prefers Mr. D to Mr. Doe or Mr. John). |
| We are Ms. Larla and Mr. Larlo to children we aren’t related to, so C. |
Same. |
| Larlos Dad |
| If they don’t know who he is, I’d say something like “Larlo’s dad, Tom” or “my husband, Tom” depending on the circumstance. |
|
A or D
I abhor the whole Mr./Miss First name convention. It reminds me of the conservative south. Disgusting. |
