DS refusing to consider anything other than the south, southeast, TX and CA

I get it- we are in New England and winter sucks big time. But makes me sad to think he will be far away and a long drive or flight. But he is adamant that he doesn't want to be anywhere where there is cold and snow during a typical winter. He also wants a completely different experience from his white, UMC high school which he will def get at the schools he is considering.

Great! Good that he knows his own preferences.

Yes, it's sad that he will be farther away. But it's good that he knows what he wants. And it will be a real change when you go to visit him.

I don't understand the question. Is there a point to this post?

He should live there now before wildfires, drought, and other extreme climate events make those states uninhabitable.

Maybe more to the point, make sure he understands that if he impregnantes his girlfriend in one of those states, he's going to be a father with everything that entails in terms of his life plans.

I agree those states are terrible, but don't you think a typical college student (and her family) will find the resources to end the pregnancy if that is desired?

He's not going to be hooking up much unless he makes sure he knows the abortion laws of each state. Looks like he should concentrate on CA.

Solid point, PP.

Good for him for having thought through one aspect of picking a place to live and go to college. Why don't you take a look at the transportation options for the schools he is looking at. Is one closer to a big airport where a flight home is direct/shorter and possibly cheaper than another that will involve a car ride to a small airport that only has a few flights a day? For our dd this ended up being part of her pro/con list. Our dd is now a junior in college and is looking at grad school. She is only looking at colleges in warm climate areas. I understand her reasoning and agree with her that she is making reasonable choices.

No Vandy, then.

It will be interesting to see how this all impacts applications, if at all.

Doesn't take long for the "abortion is birth control" crowd to chime in.

+1. Their obvious jealousy is astounding.

? We just know teenage boys don't think straight, think with other parts of their bodies, and don't realize they will need to drop out of college to pay child support, or their parents will have to pay it.

I’m very pro choice and the Supreme Court opinion is appalling. I would never expect (or want, although it’s their decision) my kids to factor that decision into college choice. I’m hoping they practice safer sex and if not, I’ll be happy to get anyone where they need to go for health care if it becomes necessary.
