MCPS equity ranking

Surprised this hasn’t been discussed here.

Any chance there school system or the BOE even acknowledges this? It’s pretty embarrassing for a system that tries to consider equity in every decision.

Please explain the practical impact of this.

I find it laughable to think the rankings mean anything. The eastern shore schools that are quickly diversifying are blatantly racist.

I’m not any study can adequately capture the racist comments people openly hurl on the heavily segregated eastern shore. It’s shocking.

Their methodology for ranking seems arbitrary. I doubt the BOE is taking Wallet Hub's ranking all that seriously.

Can someone explain the methodology and practical impact?

MoCo invests far more in diverse populations than most. And some schools actually see measurable effects.

They just compared average HHI income vs how much is spent per student

That’s what I thought. And it’s countywide, not based on the individual school, correct?

All that means is the super wealthy taxpayers of MoCo skewed the percentage.

I mean, MoCo’s tax base is dramatically different than every other county in the state. Of course the less affluent counties spend more of their paltry taxes on schools—it’s because their tax base is lower.

Yeah, I care a lot about equity but this tool is not designed for a state where the schools are funded at the county level.

What is your definition of ‘diverse populations’ in Montgomery County?

Sounds typical of what MCPS says.

Only 30% of our students are proficient in Algebra? Eh, the scoring must be ‘arbitrary’. The kids all got As and Bs in the class, right? The testing/ranking must be defective.

I think you're confused. 27% of MD students were proficient at Algebra according to the new test that was administered for the fist time after the pandemic. I haven't seen stats for MCPS specifically, but the test itself seems problematic especially since there's no baseline to compare to.

Lemme guess: you are the poster who thinks super bright Asian students are disadvantaged because mcps only cares about black and brown students?

Generally speaking, diversity (for whatever reason) means non-white (even when whites are the numeric minority). It sometimes is categorized/measured by socioeconomics—which I happen to believe is the better measure.

Yes, this statistic is meaningless, but what do you expect from a group called Wallet Hub.

We will never achieve marked proficiency unless they dramatically change their approach.
