I’ve been a loyal FD shopper for years so I’m very sad that they are going. Does anyone have any recommendations for alternatives? I know about Instacart of course, but it’s expensive and I don’t think any stores using Instacart have the same range/quality as FreshDirect. |
I'm following this thread! I've been a FD shopper for many years now, and I was bummed to get that email today.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any comparable services (I'm hoping others chime in!), but I'm thinking that for now I'll do the following: 1) Get a few more things from Trader Joe's that I used to get from FD (I always go to Trader Joe's anyway, but usually more for treats and frozen stuff) 2) Plan on getting more of our veggies from the farmer's market, when I can 3) Maybe Harris Teeter pickup for other groceries (like salad greens, which are kind of bad at TJs and not always at the farmers mkt) 4) I might check out Mercato for fish and meat. Seems like a pricey option, but maybe worth it for the limited about of meat we eat and for good seafood 5) I am now more motivated to check out South Mountain Creamery for milk delivery. That's what I've come up with! I hope others chime in -- or, better yet, I hope someone answers with the perfect delivery service that will meet all of our needs for one low, low price...that we somehow don't know about yet. ![]() |
They’re shutting down? |
Every single grocery store except Trader Joe's and Lidl offers delivery or pick up. It's not hard. |
I didn’t get the email. What is happening? |
They are going back to being NYC area only. |
I mean…it is more time consuming bc Fresh Direct had many v good options that other stores don’t have. They had great produce and fresh fish (like a WF) but also stuff you would find at a Safeway and then on top of that their own interesting house made foods. I really liked a lot of their stuff and it was a one-stop-website that took me 15 mins to grocery shop every week bc I just re-upped a prior week order depending on what was needed. Literally 15 mins…v much doubt I find something that fast and efficient for the same variety of food. |
I stopped shopping there when they changed ownership and stopped offering most of their prepared foods. Used to really enjoy their family meals. Maybe Wegman’s or Balducci’s provide similar offerings? |
Following. I’m very depressed. |
That’s a good point - we have a Wegman’s now |
Damn - I just started using Fresh Direct because WF delivery got expensive and Wegmans delivery was such a disappointment (price/selection/!quality/substitutions).
Harris Teeter’s a decent option if you plan ahead and watch out for sales (which was true of FD IMO). They actually call about all the proposed subs as they’re assembling the final order. Have used South Mountain Creamery and Washington’s Green Grocer for many years. Both are good at what they do, but neither is one-stop shopping for me. Worth getting SMC’s annual delivery pass (moo membership?) if you want fresh milk weekly — and you do! |
Same quality plummeted when peapod bought it. Just awful. |
We love South Mountain Creamery and will keep that up.
Otherwise I mostly like Instacart, though it really often depends on your shopper. |
Delivery? From Whole Foods? |
Yes, of course. |
