First day of 12th grade and my kid is anxious about...

Gun violence at school
Sexual predators (especially after the news report about the staff at Glasgow Middle school)

We just changed to TMobile from Verizon and just discovered during Open House that TMobile does not work well in the building.
This really gave me pause. May need to pay more for service again.

My kid is very level-headed and a great student. Just broke my heart when I asked about how he's feeling about the first day of school.

How did your first day go?

“Gun violence at school” (more accurately termed the criminal misuse of firearms by deranged people who might as well have had a revolving light on their head for all the administrators cared), is terrible but fortunately rare. With notable exceptions, schools today typically make some effort to be prepared. Without meaning to minimize in any way your DC’s fear, I wonder if something else might be behind it.

If a 12th grade student isn’t equipped to deal with sexual predators (both administratively and/or via a punch in the nose and a swift kick in the nads), I really don’t know what to say. Again, is there something else behind this?

Definitely get the phone fixed. Is there somebody he can talk to about processing fears and anxieties?

Oh come on. Kids have every reason to be worried about their “safe space” not actually being safe. These are legitimate concerns.

I’m an adult (teacher) and every time I change classrooms I think about what I could use to barricade doors, what could bust through a window, etc. It is reality for those in a school.

The phone thing isn’t a big deal. They can connect to WiFi.

Why on earth would you switch from Verizon to TMobile?! Verizon has the best coverage!

+1. Especially a 12th-grade boy. I would inquire more about this OP. This is not a normal concern.

Why would a 12th grader be worried about sexual assault? By that age don't they know how to handle themselves? Does he have special needs?

My 12th grader is so deep into his college essays and retaking his ACT in September that he has no thoughts left for anything else.

Unfortunately, ar my school last year, we (teachers) flagged a student who openly discussed stabbing and shooting specific students & teachers (by name) to administration, the admin told us that he probably “didn’t really” need an administrative intervention at all. This student would draw swastikas everywhere and was CAUGHT (so think of the times he wasn’t caught) with a knife at school twice. He and his mom both talked about all the guns they had at home. A lot. The mom even told us she was scared of her own kid, but admin didn’t think they needed to do anything with him whatsoever. Quite frankly, I am scared to Google his name. This was middle school, so i have no idea what happened in HS.

Going to school with a kid like this is not a theoretical fear and is legitimate. Certainly more challenging times than when I was raiised

If you want Verizon coverage, but cheaper, get one of the MVNOs that use the VZ network... Total Wireless is one, but there are others also.

Same network coverage, but they are pre-paid plans, and much cheaper.

You need to teach your kid statistics and math and how to assess actual risk.

The most dangerous thing for kids is driving and, in the long-term, being fat and out of shape.

We had verizon forever...switched to Google Fi recently bc it is literally half the price. They use TMobile coverage. Funny part is there was zero signal at Oakton HS with Verizon but excellent with Google Fi, the opposite at my other kid's middle school! You can't please everyone all the time!
