What is the maximum class size in elementary and middle school?

Just curious what the cut off is for class size in both.

What they tell you and the reality are not the sane. My kid went to a focus school in mcps. Focus schools have high farms rate so more funding and smaller class sizes from K-2nd. The problem is kids register after classes are done/organized and then kids join midway thru the school year. They don’t have he resources to add another class/classroom/teacher, they just add to current classes. I’m sure the same thing happens in non focus schools too.

There are FCPS caps and State caps. Title 1 schools each have their own class cap sizes at K-3 (anywhere from 19-26). They are waived this year, but they cannot exceed the FCPS caps for this year. Non-Title 1 schools can exceed the FCPS class size caps, but cannot exceed the state cap sizes.

Kindergarten—State: 29 FCPS: 28
Grades 1-3–State: 30 FCPS: 27
Grades 4-6–State: 35 FCPS: 29

My DCs have definitely been in classes with 30 kids or more. One year it was 32.

PP again. It was an AAP class so not sure if that was the reason why it was allowed.

When? What year? What grade levels, and was there also an instructional assistant in the class full-time? These details matter.

Same. My kids both had multiple years in elementary in classes over 30. It was explained that there weren’t available teachers applying and they didn’t have space for extra classrooms. You can say they aren’t allowed to do this but I understand how the school can’t magically come up with a teacher and even more trailers.

I am in a title 1 and I don’t think they are waived this year. We have low class sizes.

when did they lower them? I thought FCPS was at the state caps. What are the average class size limits now?

FCPS set their own class size caps years ago. Where have you been? The FCPS class size caps are what you see posted above and have been in place for years. Note that a class may have been above that number because in September there wasn’t another teacher to hire. At my school, we kept the number high and hired instructional assistants instead to support the larger classes.

It is not. My DS had a class of 31 in first grade. Kids joined the class a month or so into the school year. It was past the time that they could hire a different Teacher.

Title I must not lower class sizes all that much. My DD's 6th grade class at a Title I school had 28 kids, which is just a hair under the FCPS cap for every school. This was pre-pandemic, so no waivers would have been in effect.

I know a sixth grade class in the county that has 35 right now,. They couldn’t find a teacher.
