Fees on Takeout

Anonymous
Last Friday I picked up pizza for family movie night from a local restaurant. The receipt shows I was charged a "to go package fee" which is 3.5% of the bill and a "to go food supply chain fee" which is 4% of the bill. So I had to pay 7.5% fees in addition to the DC 10% food tax. And all of this before the requested tip. Is this typical? Are other people seeing these same fees for takeout at local mom & pop restaurants?

I probably would not order from there again since I hate add on fees. Put it in the menu price.

Fees for those boxes have gone up as much as 75%. Your lucky those were your only fees. You would pay less if you ordered in and ate there. You are free to take your business elsewhere.

Supply chain and inflation have hit every business.

I'd never go there again (including in person) after that.

I would be fine paying that altho I probably would not tip on top of that. I would be mildly annoyed if it wasn’t disclosed but I wouldn’t boycott them or anything.

Another never again vote. Let them go out of business.

You are going to punish the server/packer for the extra fees? You are truly a horrible person.

Clearly you aren’t a business owner. I love when businesses tell customers who think they are alright to pound sand!

How much do you tip fast food and in what way is a carry out counter any different?

I have a problem with them adding it to the bill if they don't have the costs of sit down expenses. If I don't have a choice to eat in, then the cost should be factored into the price.

Why? If costs have gone up, they should raise this prices instead of adding extra fees. That makes more sense to most people.

I'm the OP. I want to support our local restaurants instead of chains, but this caught me by surprised. They also charge a dine-in fee, which I guess makes a little more sense. Less takeout for us.

Were the upfront about the fees?

I can understand that raising food prices is challenging, since they would need new menus, change the website, social media, online ordering, etc and that can get very expensive for a small business.

But I would expect them to be open and upfront about it. I would be upset if it was hidden from me and would refuse to pay it if it was not disclosed.

we dont tip on takeout but these fees need to be shown up front or included in the price
