My town is sending mail with details about how to buy private insurance for sewer and water lines on our property (coverage until it reaches the main line).
Is this something worth buying? Deadline is in a couple of weeks. I have never had mail from a government before endorsing insurance like this. Would add maybe $12 or so per month to the bill. |
| It is cheap. Definitely get |
| Get your own. We have with Erie. |
| Homeowners insurance usually already covers this. Check your policy. |
| You do need it. Especially if you live in an older area. We knew several people in Delray/Rosemont who ended up using it. Homeowners will not cover it. Good news is it's cheap. |
No they don’t. |
|
Not included in policies.
Extra small payment you opt into. |
| Check the fine print and figure out how much it actually covers. Those policies are often limited strictly to the line itself, and won’t provide any coverage if they have to rip out walkways, etc., to get to the line. |
| Has anyone actually looked into the details or actually had to use one of these policies? Last I checked one of these policies the exclusions were so many, or they required repairs first, or they reimbursement was so minimal, it hardly seemed worth any extra cost. |
I have a sewer line coverage on my policy. |

I live in del ray and had the water line insurance
Sure enough we had a leak and they replaced the entire line for free Guys doing it said it would have been 8 grand to do. Cost us two years of 7 dollars a month Pretty good return if you ask me! |
DP. Probably added as a rider. This coverage would be instead of that rider. Standard form homeowners insurance typically does not cover sewer line repairs (although they may cover flood damage if a sewer line backs up and floods your home). |
Most insurance companies don’t offer sewer line replacement, even a a rider. They do offer flooding from sewer line back ups as a rider. I think some posters are confusing the two. |

I was just discussing this this morning with a plumber. I'm in Virginia and the Dominion insurance is what would be offered here. He said that until a few years ago, it was great. They would replace the entire sewer line if there was a problem or it reached the end of its lifespan. But they sold the policies to another company that keep reducing the benefit. Now, they will only replace the portion that is broken and backing up.
So, read the fine print. |
| Read the fine print. Often the companies selling this type of insurance don't cover homes over a certain age. |
