Wards 7 & 8 on crime

Do the poeple in those wards, predominantly AA, even want cops. I thought AAs were against this kind of policing and wanted to defund it?

Polling shows the opposite. Defund the police is popular amongst well off activists and no one else

This isn't Wards 7 & 8, but similar dynamics -- a young man was shot in the head in the middle of a busy food court during the day at PG Plaza yesterday. Just horrific. Speaking to friends in PG county (almost all AA), every one of them wants more law enforcement to prevent and punish this kind of thing. No one wants this kind of violence in their community.

The more nuanced positions I hear want better relationships with the police, more local community members on the police force who will be able to bridge the gap in trust between the community and the police force. I don't know anyone who says "defund the police" except hardcore activists. Most community members are frustrated with the police but not because they oppose police on principle but because the police are ineffectual at actually protection people here. We see how law enforcement responds to threats in white, rich communities and we notice how different that is from how they respond here. Racism, corruption, and disengagement ARE problems. You can't just say "more police" without addressing those issues. But there is such disregard and distrust for black people, even among black cops, that it can feel futile.

Believe it or not, "Wards 7 & 8" are not a monolith.

A: Some people want more police right now no matter what.

B: Some people want more police but only if it can be done in a socially responsible manner that will make efforts to address violent criminals without abuse, indiscriminate killings, and ruining lives unnecessarily.

C: Some people are fine the way things are.

D: Some people want fewer police.

E: Some people want police out of their communities entirely.

As any intelligent person would expect, the fringes have the fewest proponents (but often the most vocal) and the middle has the most. If you want to know this Ward 7 resident's opinion, it's option B.

A very naive question:
Do the victims of a repeat offender sue the government or DA office because they let the criminal out again and again until someone got killed?
In another word, can the judge or DA be held accountable?

Everybody wants less crime. Lots of people are afraid to call the police because they are worried the police will show up and shoot someone. This is on the police.

Only idiots think fewer police officers is the answer.

Most of us (minority and middle class), want more, but accountable cops. Not a bunch of unaccountable white supremacists.

Your child has been slashed to death by a maniac who is hiding in your apartment and you don’t cal the police because you care more about the murderer than your child?

Are you stupid or just trolling?

If (and that's a HUGE if) your ridiculous made up straw man situation were to happen, they wouldn't hesitate to call the police "because they care more about the murderer than their child," they would hesitate to call the police because they're afraid the cops will show up and shoot THEM instead of the murderer because to many cops "hey black person = murderer, right?"

And the actual scenarios where black people don't want to call the police is not when they're hiding in a closet from a serial killer, it's when some stranger is banging on their door at 3am. Are they actually trying to come in and rob you or are they drunk and lost and calling the police creates a very real risk of the police shooting them? It's when you see someone walking through your neighborhood with an Amazon package under their arm. Is it a package thief or are you about to ruin some poor black man's life who is just walking home from the Amazon locker at 7-11?

So all the black cops in DC are looking to shoot you --- that paranoia must be a burden

Police aren’t indiscriminate killers. Police have killed 36 people over the last decade in DC - less than four per year. The vast majority of those were armed and an active threat. That’s compared to over 1500 murders in the same time period, and the homicide rate is rising sharply in recent years.

And how many of the 36 were suicide by cop?

Name-calling is regrettably effective mob-mobilization on social media. That must be why you're so fond of it.
