| Any personal experience with the weather here? |
| No, but the word "Arctic" gives me a good idea of what one should expect. |
| Hahaha. What do you want, op? It can actually be very pleasant in summer but winters are cold, long, and most strikingly dark. You always hear about the midnight sun of Norway in summer but rarely the noon moon of winter! Norway is gorgeous but very expensive. |
| Balmy. |
| Is it worse than Boston? |
Worse in what way? It's colder and darker, anyway. |

I've been there in winter. It's cold and dark. You can see the Northern Lights at night sometimes.
Like.. really cold.. and sun start setting at 3pm. Also at the time it had the most expensive Burger King in the world. I think it was nearly $15 for a whopper meal but that was also one of the cheapest places to eat in town so I wen there more than once due to my limited budget. |
It is waaaay worse than boston!! Of all the unis in Europe why are you even looking into this one? It has zero cache in the EU |
|
| What is with people on DCUM always trying to send their kids to the most obscure European universities? Is it some misguided belief in their prestige? |
I've been to Tromso multiple times (I lived and worked in Norway for three years). It's not nearly as cold in the winter as one might think. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the normal high temperature in January is in the upper 20s - not uncommon to get above freezing - and at night it's usually in the low 20s or teens. I don't think it ever drops below zero Fahrenheit. That being said, what others have posted about it being dark (in the winter) and expensive is absolutely true. And given the cost of alcohol in Norway (prices in bars are pretty outrageous), one can't afford to find solace by drinking. |

Don't forget to take some Burger King coupons from the weekly junk-mail mailers. |
It's a coastal city so make sure to pack swim suits |
It's about the same as both Boston and DC. |
And Los Angeles too!
