| Couple of 8th kids whose parents held them back a year are supposedly trying out for HS sports this year (not in my kids’ sport). Is that seriously allowed? If so, that is some BS when FCPS doesn’t let homeschoolers play for their teams. |

I think people push this rumor out every year.
If you hold in middle school (8th) then I guess you would get 4 years of high school. I cannot imagine holding your kid for sports related reasons. But if the kid was struggling in school and needed to be held and was also an athlete - then that is life. The goal was to help a struggling student and perhaps it will. If the kid becomes a better athlete that confidence might be a big help. More parents need to worry about themselves and their own. Don't compare your child. If your child is getting less play time because of it, then tell your child to improve. |
How is this BS? Homeschoolers have opted out of the public school system. They should not be allowed to opt in to public school system sport. They can join rec leagues, clubs, etc. If you allow homeschoolers in, why not private school kids who might like a particular high school sport. |
| I think it’s called a reclass and my kid’s travel teammate is doing this. I don’t know all the details but I don’t think they get 5 years of eligibility- just their normal 4? But the upside is that they’re older than their class and will stand out for their athletic ability. Seems to me that colleges would realize that a kid is talented in comparison to his class because he’s older but obviously there must be some benefit to doing this. |
I believe 8th graders that aged out of county programs can play JV or Freshman level sports at their local high school. Then they get their 4 years of high school eligibility when they get to high school, UNLESS they turn 20 years old. |
Someone just posted this on the High School Try Out thread. That an 8th grader can play at the high school level if not offered at their middle school. For Fairfax that would mean that any 8th grader could play since no sports are offered (the poster said this is a State rule). I have never heard of this - but it has nothing to do with being held back. It would mean you could try out and perhaps make the team in 8th grade - play that year and then four more in high school, giving five total. I would like to see where this is codified though. |

So VHSL allows for it, but that doesn't mean the county does.

I’m not saying the held their kids back in order to play sports later or not. What i do know is that a few 8th grade kids my my kids friend circle are trying out for JV teams at our HS. I have an 8th and a 9th grader FWIW so I know what grade these friends are in and their bdays. |
Because the middle schoolers are not in the HS either. |

According to the required participation/consent/physical form in FCPS, the first two eligibility rules are that the participant -
- Must be a regular bona fide student in good standing of the school you represent. - Must be enrolled in the last four years of high school. (Eighth grade students may be eligible for junior varsity) My read on that is that the only 8th graders trying out for HS sports should be those in secondary schools (so that they are students there) and that they can only be on the JV team. |
My understanding is that ANY 8th grader can tryout if the Sport is not offered in MS not just those held back. Homeschoolers are NOT enrolled in Public schools. My redshirted son's school did not offered that option. |
In my book (which means nothing to FCPS) a public school 8th grader isn’t enrolled in the public high school and should not be part of that high school community. Doesn’t matter if they are in the high school’s pyramid. It is a very small group of kids, mostly of entitled parents. |
| I really don’t care if any do this. High school sports are a lot. If a kid can make the team and a parent is willing to do all of that extra driving to rush them to the high school every day to practice with the older kids, have at it. If they are that good they are usually playing club, not trying to get on the HS team in 8th. |
Are there football and basketball clubs? |
Travel football only lasts through 8th grade, high school is where the competition is, and because of the physical nature of the sport even the top kids aren't playing two teams in high school. Club basketball is huge in this area. |
