Does anyone know how APS determines bus stops? Are we just not going back to pre-COVID stops? Our bus stop moved pretty far away during hybrid school but I hoped it would move back at some point. |
I have no idea, but I have emailed transportation because ours is across a four lane road with no stoplight and over half a mile away. It makes no sense |
Are you in an option school? Hub stops are being used because there is a driver shortage (nationwide and ongoing for years) |
My kindergartner is at an option school and her stop is a mile away, crossing several very large streets. Not only would it take a ridiculously long time to walk her there, it would actually take as long to drive to the bus stop (which is 1.2 miles driving and in heavy traffic) as it would to just drive her to school. |
OP here - not an option school and thankfully not across a four lane road. It just used to be right next to my house and now it’s far enough away that it is easier to drive. |
I was PP who has to cross a four lane road. It is a neighborhood school. We just live on the very edge of the boundary and have to walk through our neighborhood, through the next one, and then cross a major road (think Columbia Pike/Glebe/George Mason) to get into the third neighborhood to be bussed to school.
If we don't get the stop changed we will probably have to have our nanny drive him to school. We are only a mile or so away, so it would also be much faster just to have him walk or take WMATA buses. |
As mentioned, option schools now use hub stops, but in general I think there are fewer stops/routes due to shortages. Which will only result in more people just driving to school. |
As the PP who mentioned having an unsafe bus stop, I emailed transportation and they moved it. It is worth asking, especially if you know of another stop that is closer. |
This. It was also a way to shorten bus rides for kids in option schools, because the bus doesn't stop to pick up as many times, just does 1-3 hub stops to load up and then right to school. We are technically bus riders, but we live about .75 miles from the school. We have to cross a very busy 4 lane road to get there. But our bus stop is a mile in the opposite direction, that crosses a VERY busy parking lot exit/entrance on a very busy 4 lane road. So, we've stopped using the bus entirely and we walk as a group with other neighbors. I would prefer they classify us as walkers and add a crossing guard though, but for now we're just making due. Since I WFH now I actually really like the walk. |
