Last year we wanted to buy a beach house and the one we wanted fell through. Then life got busy and we went on a bunch of vacations so the beach house was on the back burner. We now have 800k cash in a savings account. We still want a vacation home/potential retirement home.
Where is your vacation home? Do you rent it out? How often do you use it? Where would you buy one if you could? Our problem is that between work, school and kids sports, we don’t have a ton of time. We also like to travel to new places so I feel like we may not go to this vacation home enough. I love the idea of having a house where we can bring our friends and my kids could one day bring their families. My kids are in elementary and middle school now. |
| We bought a Condo in Rehoboth in 2019 and love it. We rent it out but block time for ourselves. We still go on vacations to other places but it’s nice for a few days in the summer plus weekends in the off season. We do week long rentals in the summer but off season it’s only a 2 night minimum. No major issues so far. |
| Look at the climate change maps to see where the coastline will be different. Then evaluate. Definitely don't do southern FL. |
| I have my eye on Shenandoah Valley. Close enough for a weekend and not affected by sea rise/hurricanes. |
| I always thought somewhere on in the Great Lakes area would be nice. |

Ok, let's make one thing clear: if you rent it out, it's not a "vacation house." It's an investment. If you "have a condo in Rehoboth" and "block out a week" for yourself, it's an investment.
Got it? |
| Meh. Either buy an investment property or invest money otherwise and rent the same place you like year after year somewhere |
Do you think it will be beachfront property in a few decades? |
Ha, probably not but I love the beach and the mountains but think the mountains are more practical for my retirement in 20 years. |

We have a beach/bay house and go probably at least 25 times a year. We don’t rent it. I love that we can decide to go and don’t even need to pack because we leave everything we need there. I hate the thought of people sleeping in our beds.
We also travel to other places a few times a year. We plan to retire at least part time to that house. |
| We own a few houses. One in Sandbridge - it's 2nd row (go a few times a year), Wintergreen (go 4-5 times a year), and Canaan Valley, WV that we go to 7-10 times a year. I like all the houses for different reasons. It is tough with kids and activities. We like to ski and the beach. In addition to these weekend or long weekend trips we take do take a weekly vacation to somewhere else. I think after years of renting houses that weren't that nice for the price, we just decided to "invest" in homes in places we knew we would like to go back to locally. We have looked at Bethany, Greene County, VA, Cape Charles, Charlottesville, and Charleston, SC. |
Yea, you rent them out. |
|
Rehoboth, don’t rent.
For me personally, it needs to be close enough for an easy weekend trip, so that it gets enough use without feeling obligated to spend longer vacations there. Also, the beauty of having a place is being able to leave all your stuff there, and not having to pack. |
We shied away from Rehoboth because it really isn't close enough for an "easy" weekend trip. It sure isn't an "easy" every weekend trip. No friggin way. |
Exactly. Our friends won’t even visit their own house on holiday weekends because the traffic is too much. They only go on regular weekends. No thanks. I also don’t want to deal with repairs and maintenance - it’s annoying enough at our primary. |
