How big are intro class sizes at UVA vs W&M?

Anonymous
It's hard to see from the website when the website says:

14:1 student to faculty ratio at UVA and 12:1 at W&M.

How big are the lower-level intro classes?

Thank you!

One of the professors made this simple way of looking at the classes. You can be in a small ~20 person class while also being in a 300 person lecture. It all depends on what courses you pick.

Very large, especially at UVA. Particularly for STEM fields.

At UVA they are huge!

300 in my UVA first year’s chemistry class, but all of his other classes have between 25-40

If your kid has AP credit, they might be exempt from intro courses. Keep that in mind.

Depends on the class but can be over 300 for the more popular classes.

For many classes (non stem) though they do discussion sessions of 20 which really helps and and labs/expos for sciences.

UVA intro level classes in the College are usually around 300. ECON 101 has 500 per class. The large classes often have a discussion class once a week with around 20 students and a TA.

As an aside: Ivy League Cornell University has several classes with over 1,000 students.

The biggest intro class my kid has had at W&M was around 50-60.

What’s the course?

Berkley has a 2000 person Computer Science course.

Oh, my. Much worse than when I attended a state flagship back when. Intro Econ courses were more like 200 then. Of course, Econ is much more popular now, but it does make top LAC costs vs oos UVA costs (which are nearly as high) seem to be the better “bargain.”

There’s zero difference in the student experience once a lecture gets over 100. A 200 person lecture is huge and your professor didn’t know your name. Don’t be silly.
