Educate me: what is the motivation here and back in India? WaPo has a story on the front page but it is behind a paywall. I’ve been catching bits and pieces but don’t fully understand.

India was probably because Hindu nationals view him as caving into Muslims. Here, probably for the reason on South Africa. He only advocates for Indians in South Africa

Oh wow. So does that mean there are nationalists in India trying to reunite India and Pakistan? And/or push Muslims out of India (and Pakistan)?

As for here and in S.A., was his advocacy just for rights of Indians/Hindus or for Indians/Hindus to be seen as superior somehow to Adrians (eg, Black Africans, Afrikaans)? I’m assuming that these nationalists (if not Ghandi) see Hinduism as a pre-req for being authentically Indian, but maybe not?

I think he only advocated for racial laws to not apply to Indians in South Africa but his argument was that the South African laws shouldn’t apply to British subjects Abd black Africans would have fallen under that category too.

Gandhi is a much more controversial figure in India vs in the West. He is not well regarded by racial and religious minorities because, while he kicked out the Brits, he was instrumental in reinforcing a rigid caste system that essentially put upper class Indians in the place of Brits.

His political legacy is also a subject of controversy as his family name continues as a political dynasty even as they become increasingly distant from India. Sonia Gandhi cant even speak Hindi fluently.

As an Indian American, I'm just going to let the law catch however did this before I get hot under the collar.
There are too many bad actors on this thread, for me to join in. I don't love being manipulated.

Duh! I hope I misunderstood you as you spoke so fluently about Gandhi.

The one Americans know (you know, from the movie) is not related to Indira Gandhi and there fore the Gandhi dynasty. Maybe you are thinking Nehru?

I understand the danger of nationalism (with religious undertone) that is in rise now. I am no Modi-bhakt and but I know for a fact that Gandhi is not being purged anywhere in India.

But since you made a statement please provide a proof.

Gandhi’s history is becoming a subject of debate in recent years since the younger generations do not want to agree to the one dimensional characterization of him. Gandhi has been used by the Nehru family dynasty (and Congress party) to hold on to power and that create certain tension. His contribution to India’s freedom is noteworthy. At the same time there have been many other noteworthy freedom fighters who have been ignored in Indian history for far too long due to Congress party’s strong hold of power for a long time. In addition, Gandhi’s flaws was never publicly debated for the same reason as why other freedom fighters were not recognized.

All these though does not mean Gandhi’s name will be erased from Indian history or anyone is trying to. It’s a very complicated subject and I would leave it up to the Indian people to reach to their conclusion.

The vandalism in USA should not be dismissed due to the debate on Gandhi in India.

While you are correct that the Nehrus are not blood related to Mahatma. It is nevertheless ALSO true that they use this surname and have had a political dynasty under the Gandhi name. And, they are absolutely guilty of creating the illusion of familial connection to Mahatma. From a political standpoint, it is very difficult to extract his legacy from the Nehru family.
