Mail on ballots caused the MD election delays

Anonymous
By weeks. While I think mail in voting is convenient it delays results by weeks. I think this is problematic

Laws need to change so that Board of Elections can start processing and counting ballots as soon as they arrive.

Half of Florida's ballots are mail-in yet they don't have these issues. Mail them early, require them to be received (not postmarked) by election day, and process them before election day so that counting can begin ASAP (i.e. take them out of their envelopes and put them in the queue to be counted).

How long does it take for the mail to get from any place in Maryland to any other place? Three days? Four? Even if your standard is that it only has to be postmarked by election day, they should all be received by the end of the week. The focus needs to be on improving the process so they're counted more quickly.

Does anyone know what problem they were trying to solve by prohibiting counting before the polls close?

Mail-in-ballots don't cause any delays at all.

Incompetence caused the delay.

yep, we used to do mailin votes all the time in CA when we lived there 10 yrs ago. We didn't have any problems with delays. Postmarked by election day.

That allows the USPS to f*ck with elections. No thanks.

A combination of incompetence and the fact that unlike other states, they could not open the envelopes before election day is what caused the delay.

This. "Thanks" MD republicans.

Lol. This was in a largely democratically controlled state and an entirely democratically controlled county and a democratic primary.

The Republican governor vetoed legislation which would have allowed earlier counting.

Requiring that they be “received” by Election Day is way too stringent, since the person mailing the ballot has zero control over what happens once it’s mailed. This is why DeJoy is still in charge of the USPS — offering opportunities to “delay” ballots from certain areas. I agree that the ballots should be processed as they arrive.

That had to delay counting the ballots thanks to a Republican governor.

How was this a Democratic primary”? Republicans had a primary as well.

Opening before election day runs the risk of election day influence if the results get leaked.

No it doesn't, they don't actually count the votes. Happens in a lot of states. https://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/vopp-table-16-when-absentee-mail-ballot-processing-and-counting-can-begin.aspx
