We have a tiny townhouse with a tiny front and back yard, both with grass. Well, grass and weeds and seedlings from nearby trees.
Should I seed in the fall or spring? What would be fine for a small, north/south facing yard? I don't need it to be an award winning lawn, just fuller and healthier than it is now. |
| One of the best things you can do for a fuller, healthier lawn is topdress it. Ie, spread new soil over the top of your existing lawn and rake it in. Then overseed onto this. Since it’s a smaller lawn, this should be manageable. You can aerate as well. |
Thanks! For the topdress, what time of year is the best time to do this? |
fall or spring. fall is better than spring |

get one of these. in the fall (mid sept/oct), cut your lawn as short as you can; put that on and walk around; spread some starter fertilizer; spread seeds (make sure it has good contact with ground); and cover with top soil. Then water it at least once a day. Twice is better for two weeks minimum. keep watering after that time to time. |
You can topdress in September in preparation for overseeding in very late September/early October. I know the inclination/advice is that you can start seeding after Labor Day, but September just tends to be such a hot/dry month now. I know it's not magic, but it feels like it. Last year after 2-3 weeks, I see the baby grass blades start popping up (and not completely filling out the bare spots) and I think there's no way this is going to work. The process picks back up in Spring and by late Spring/early Summer, it's completely filled out and blended with the rest of the lawn. |
