| People say Virginia is known for peanuts but I’ve never seen boiled peanuts here! You have to go down to SC or lower. what gives? |
You have to go south in Virginia. Boiled peanuts are very popular in the Tidewater area. Lots of farms grow peanuts down there. Think small towns like Waverly, Wakefield, Surry, etc. I have lots of family ties in the Tidewater area. Most people up here in NoVA don't seem to be aware that a rural part of that region exists! |

I live in the Tidewater area and drive through peanut country frequently and I’ve never eaten, nor even seen, boiled peanuts. This is an old article from the Virginian-Pilot:
“The end product is a curious snack, wildly popular in the Deep South, mildly popular here, widely disliked elsewhere. "They have a following," said Kayleigh Felderman, manager of Stoney's Produce in Virginia Beach. "You start to recognize the boiled peanut people. People remember them from their childhood." The problem with neophytes, according to the boiled crowd, is that they go in expecting classic peanut crunch and flavor, elements absent from the boiled snack. Instead, pinching the dark brown, soggy shells apart yields soft, salty nuggets with a flavor that's far more bean than peanut.” https://www.pilotonline.com/food-drink/article_2d5189c6-09cb-504b-8269-6f4b5e059bf0.html |

They’re an NC thing too, especially along the coast.
I’ve gotten boiled peanuts at one of the Vietnamese shops in the Eden Center. |
Really?? If you remember the name of the shop please come back. This southern girl is missing them! They are a PITA to do yourself- you have to get them green. |
| Suffolk VA. Boiled peanuts are no longer that popular, but they have delicious large salted peanuts. |

You can order from Virginia Diner. https://www.vadiner.com/product/Salted-Virginia-Peanuts
I don’t know if they qualify as boiled the way they’re cooked but they’re very good. You can often give them in random gift shops and grocery stores, too. |
Virginia Diner peanuts are delicious, but that’s not what OP’s talking about. I believe boiled peanuts are soft like beans. |
Boiled peanuts are very tender — also salty and amazing. The shell will usually still have some salt water within it. So good. Last time I had ones that knocked my socks off was a roadside stand of sort (fire, kettle drum, ma & pa) in the hills of Georgia. You can also just make them yourself. Boil longer than you think necessary. |
| We stopped for these along roadsides when I was growing up in Augusta GA. I thought they were pretty weird at first but grew to love them. |
