parents of MC2 students- any advice?

My child is a rising senior and will take all classes through MC this school year. If your child went through this program, please share your experience with the college application process. Did you child apply as a freshman? what are their college plans? Attend for a shorter amount of time? Attend as a part time student? Get a masters degree in that time? I'm curious to know how other students handled the transition. TIA

I like it for my child. They took AP US History freshman year. Sophomore year they took two APs plus one MC course in the fall and one in the spring (taught by an MC virtually - it would have been in person at Northwood but it was Covid). Junior year they took more MC courses (in person but at Northwood) spread out over fall, winter, spring, plus three AP courses. As a senior they will take 4 courses through MC each semester and all will be on MC campus or virtual. Some kids take more classes over winter or summer, it just depends on how they do on AP exams. I know some kids drop out of the program b/c they don't want to be away from their high school senior year.

I have done alumni interviews with MC2 students and dual enrollment students from other states and they were all applying as freshmen, not transfers.

They apply as a freshman to colleges (not a transfer) because they don't yet have their high school diploma. Once they decide where to attend, they send their MC transcript and the school will determine what credits are accepted and what courses are still needed for the desired degree. If they completed the associates degree, it's like a "bundle", and that meets the gen ed requirements of public state schools. Private schools may do their own thing - you have to check at each school. If they didn't complete the associates degree, then it is a course-by-course evaluation, similar to AP/IB credits.

My DC is planning to still spend 4 years at college, but will take a few more exploratory courses freshman year, plans to either double major or complete a masters in that time, and might do some co-ops.

OP here. This is so helpful. Thanks for taking the time to respond! It's helpful to have a better understanding of the process.

Even if your kid does well on the AP exams, they can choose to take additional winter and summer MC classes for other reasons.

My child in the program currently has been very happy with it.

Yes - good point. They can take other courses.
