So I have a rising 10th grader due to take Honors Pre-Calc.
They are not a natural Math kid and have needed some extra help to keep grades up, for the past year or so. I know we have the option of dropping down to regular Pre-Calc and may well take that if the course is too challenging. What I'm trying to figure out is next steps, for 11th & 12th grade. I think we'll have to avoid the AP Calc etc but I know nothing about these math classes listed in terms of which are harder than others, which are a total wash out etc. This is the list, any advice gratefully received! calculus with applications multivariable calc intro to statistics quantative literacy linear algebra |

mine dropped out from hon pre-cal to pre-cal at 10
then calculus with applications 11 intro to statistics 12 |
Thank you. Do you know anything about those other courses? If there's a hierarchy of which ones are considered slightly more challenging than others? I'd like to take the pressure off, but not dump them in the lowest class possible, necessarily. |
| Honors precalc is reputed to be more difficult than AP Calc AB. I’d plan on taking AB regardless of whether DC takes honors or regular precalc. |
Thank you. I had heard that too. Do you know if you're eligible for that AP at all if you've not taken the honors Pre-Calc? |
| What school? My kid's school had regular and honors pre-calc as a mixed class. Might as well get the honors gpa boost in that situation. |

I'd go to regular pre-calc.
11th grade could be Calc with App and 12th grade could be Calc AB. My DC graduated in June. He took Calc with App in 12th grade. The teacher said to me that many more kids were doing Calc with App in 11th, to be followed by AB in 12th since the 2020-2021 virtual year basically sucked from a learning standpoint. (My DC had debated Calc AB as a senior, but like other families with concerns on "how much did they actually learn in virtual school", took Calc with App) At our school, you can definitely go regular precalc to Calc AB, but you should ask your dept head. |
Multivariable calc and linear algebra come after BC calc, so knock those off your list. |
Thanks! |
Really helpful info. Thanks. |

Quantitative Literacy is a solid course. My DC took it as a senior, in addition to another math course. It is not "hard", per se, but the knowledge is really good to have.
Some of the topics I remember my DC discussing were: taxes (sales, personal, etc.), developing a budget, lending/borrowing, and a unit on the stock market. |

My DS took Calc with Applications in 11th and AP Calc AB in 12th.
My DD is at a school that doesn’t offer applications. She is going to take AP Calc AB in 11th and then probably statistics. I wish there were more choices. |
That sounds like a very user friendly & practical course, which is helpful. Thanks. |
| Mine went from Hon Pre Calc to on level Pre Calc in 10th. He will be taking Calculus with Applications in 11th. 12th is to be determined, but most likely AP Calc (not sure if it will be AB or BC). He has a much better foundation now after going to on level for pre calculus. Having Algebra 2 virtually was not great for him to actually learn and retain anything. |
OP here yes, this is the issue we've been having too, the foundation years of Algebra 1 & Geometry which were virtual are all but forgotten (I know they were also 60% missing). The 4 page math revision work provided by the HS is only half done because my kid now cannot remember how to do the rest. And that was in person last year. |
