"Anonymous"......2011.....UK.......Palace/Literary intrigue in Elizabethan/Shakespearean England.......Great period piece that's thought provoking, well produced and has a terrific story-line.....Usually wouldn't go for something like this, but glad I did!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1521197/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 I'm COVID quarantining right and any other suggestions would be appreciated.....I've had it with the stale mainstream! |
| Empire of the Sun (1987) - young Christian Bale, Steven Spielberg directed. Incredibly moving story that all three of my kids have loved. Not really a "kid" movie as it's pretty dark, but they love stories of survival and grit. |
| I don’t know why it came to mind, but Out of Sight is exceptionally good. I also happen to move Brittany Runs a Marathon for something completely different. |
|
| Layer Cake (2004). English, I think. Daniel Craig before Bond. Drug dealer trying to get out keeps getting pulled back in. |

The painted veil with Ed Norton and Naomi Watts
Come See the Paradise Defending your Life with Meryl Streep and Albert Brooks Gentlemen Prefer Blonds, mainly for Jane Russels amazing performance—love her scenes with the Olympic US mens swimming team and her imitating Marilyn in French court. |

Dancer on the Dark, Melancholia, Breaking the Waves or any other Lars von Trier movie.
Volver or anything by Pedro Almodovar The Lobster with Olivia Colman, Colin Ferrell, Rachel Weisz |
| Amélie from 2001. Just saw last week. Hard to believe I just found it! So uplifting and great cityscape shots of Paris. It's in French. |
+1 for Amelie. Also suggest Girl With the Pearl Earring |
Under the radar? it had a $10M budget and made $174M at the box office when it came out. |
| The Harder They Fall on Netflix. The story is fictional, but all the characters are real. I am not into cowboy movies, but this is very entrertaining. Regina King, Idris Elba, and many others. |
Think it was pretty much under the radar in North America though. Did win People's Choice Award at TIFF. |
NP here. I certainly have never heard of it. |

August Rush
I loved Keri Russell and Jonathan Rhys Meyers in that. I think the lead actor from The Good Doctor was the child lead in the movie. |
What? It was incredibly popular and successful here. It launched Audrey Tatou and she was on every magazine cover for a year because she was the most charming person ever, and wore that cool fish-scale dress to the Oscars (IIRC) and then was on a bunch more magazine covers because she was the most stylish person ever. She never had another movie nearly as successful in North America, not as a lead. |
