International Weight Control Registry

Anonymous
Is an international initiative to track people who have successfully lost weight and kept it off. It came from the weight control registry that was started at Brown University. After reading about the registry and its findings, I implemented some of the techniques and have kept off 30 lbs for over a year. This registry enrolls new members on an ongoing basis.

For those who need hope...

Good luck

Can you give us more info? Are you encouraging people to join or can you see the tips without enrolling? (Yes, I briefly visited the website).

Yes - encouraging people to join or look up the success stories. There are so many posts on this forum on how it’s impossible to lose weight. You can google some of the findings. Info I’ve found online about it includes: exercise an hour a day, eating plan that satisfies hunger, keep a journal of what you’re eating, general feelings of wellness or stress, triggers, weighing self at least once a week.

Great! It’s wonderful that you’ve found some helpful strategies that work for you!

My take on many of the comments that I’ve read here is not that it’s “impossible to lose weight” — but that it’s extremely difficult to successfully maintain the weight loss long term — ie: 5 or more years. This site does sound like a useful resource.

I’m in the registry. They email me a survey once a year. It’s been 10 years since my 50lb weight loss. I put 20 back on at one point and haven’t been able to shake it, so I’ve maintained a 30lb loss.

There is a book based on the findings of what people need to do to successfully maintain a loss - it’s got maintenance in the title. It’s a little depressing because of the energy we need to devote to managing weight for a lifetime after that kind of loss. Your body is always trying to get back to its original weight. What I remember from the book - and I do - is realize I’ll be managing this as a chronic disease the rest of my life, and that trying different diets can help me lose again when I regain a few pounds. So I’ve tried them all! But I have to be consciously doing something to manage my weight or I’ll regain.
