High school Backpack recommendations

My DD has a LL Bean deluxe book bag. In high school they won’t have lockers and will need to carry their coats, lunch and books all day. This back pack is nice but I’m open to suggestions. I wonder if the classic Jansport with a single compartment is more practical.

Which high school doesn't have lockers? They are available, it is up to students to use them.

Students generally don't carry books at all in HS, just their own folders and supplies. They also don't wear coats - they layer and bring hoodies or light jackets.

Sherwood HS. There are lockers but many of the parents that I have spoken with, and the kids, tell us that nobody uses lockers. Their classes are very spread out and there is no time in between classes.

Adding that my daughter is getting nervous about the amount of stuff she will need to carry. She will take the bus and she wears a winter coat and does not eat school lunches, so that's a lot of stuff to carry. If the "Nobody uses lockers" is overstated then she will feel better about having a place to store her coat and lunch.

There are lockers. No one carries books. HS kids don’t wear coats. Personally I’d wait until after school starts and let your kid tell you what they think will work best. If kids don’t use their lockers there can be a whole lot more to carry around than their hoodie - instruments, things for sports practice, etc. it’s hard to anticipate needs without knowing what they will actually need to carry.

FWIW, mine carries two backpacks and uses a locker.

I swear my MS kid carries a 30-pound pack back and forth every day. It's kind of nuts.

Keep the current backpack. Tell your DS to take a locker when they offer it first week. She may need her own lock. Then she has flexibility to decide when and how to use it, especially when winter comes.

Nobody would get caught dead using a locker. It's a matter of social stigma.

Madison HS only assigns lockers to freshman & sophomore but my kid only attempted to use his first half of 9th grade. There wasn’t enough time between classes so he went before lunch on certain A/B days. And then gave up.

My current 10th grader would never carry a jansport. They are a meme/joke to her and her friends. (I have fond memories of mine circa 1990-2995 and They have great reviews on Amazon. ) a lot of kids last year had a couple of different models.of The north face. My kid had an under armor hustle. She liked that style because it had a compartment for her gym shoes in the bottom . We Bought at Dicks sporting goods a few days before school started (after returning TNF that was too small for her change of clothes and shoes. It only really lasted 1 year. We will get her another one/color this year. It was $50.

The only backpack to carry is a Tom Bihn. (and if your kid gets one you'll be so jealous!)

My kids love their Northface Borealis backpacks.
You have to request a locker in hs. I work in an mcps hs and quite a few students use them.
