If you don't spray for mosquitos, what are the best alternatives?

Make sure you have no standing water on your property and use fans when sitting outside.

DEET and fans.

No standing water, absolutely. Those garlic pellets work. It also comes in a spray, but you said you don't want that. It really does work and is non-toxic.

I am a mosquito magnet. I use mosquito repellent on my clothes, wear a citronella cream on skin, full sleeves and pants with socks and shoes, and lots of fans. Fans are key. I have also planted a lot of lavender, rosemary and marigolds in the yard and they repel a lot of unwanted pests. No standing water. Keep the yard free of trash, litter, and clutter, and too much vegetation.

Finally, last year we had a nest of hornets in the yard and they did not bother us at all. However, they ate up all the gnats and mosquitos in the yard and it was amazing to be outside without a single mosquito in sight.

I don’t go outside unless I have bug spray (DEET) on. The mosquitoes come for me if I stand still for three minutes.

We have bats this year, and the mosquitos are much less of a problem.

Thanks. Will this harm a garden with tomatoes, peppers, cukes, etc?

I don’t think so. You hang it up and the mosquitoes fly in and die. It never touches your plants or yard. We hang ours from a tree at the back of our yard.

OP, I'm at my wits end trying to control for Asian tiger mosquitoes. They are BRUTAL.

No standing water is easier said than done, especially if you have neighbors who don't do anything. Rarely have I found to reduce the amount of standing water to have any significant impact on adult mosquito populations. No one wants to spray to kill mosquitoes, so the only alternative rally are attempting traps. I just setup a multilayered defense this week OP, we will see how it goes:

Layer 1: kill larvae with hay in a bucket of water containing mosquito dunks. People use mosquito dunks in standing bodies of water, but by putting hay in a bucket, you can hopefully lure mosquitoes to water containing mosquito dunks. Mosquitoes are supposedly attracted to the smell of fermenting hay:

https://ui.charlotte.edu/story/try-%E2%80%98bucket-doom%E2%80%99-eliminate-mosquitoes-without-harmful-pesticides

Layer 2: in order to catch the adult mosquitoes, I did what this YouTube guy did and made this active mosquito trap on a nice budget:

It took a little bit of work, but it was a fun project. I literally just.set this kind of trap up, so we will see how it goes. The fan is definitely creating a vacuum, so I am hopeful this will work.

Layer 1 = kill larvae, layer 2 = kill adults. No pesticides and friendly for the good insects/pollinators. I cannot stand these Asian tiger mosquitoes anymore, which is why I got active about trying some kind of method to kill these horrible creatures.

Does this also work for no-see-ums/ biting gnats? They seem to be worse than mosquitoes this year where we are in NW DC

I use Terrashield from Doterra. I put a quarter size of olive oil in my hand, 1 drop of Terrashield, rub hands together, and wipe on myself. It smells great like root beer, and no need to wash off, no chemicals.

If I forget to use and get bit, I put tea tree oil on the bite and itching stops. I use mine diluted in a roller.
